Now I expected the patriotic decor to be on sale since the July 4th holiday is over. I found American Flag sets including the mounting brackets and poles for $5! Also found lots of the other 4th of July decor items such as the paper products, candles, and lighted stars. So if you need supplies for next year now is the time to get them while they are cheap!

What I was most surprised to find was that the toy department had a large amount on clearance, ranging from 30% to 50% off. It looks like the store is getting ready to reset a lot of the merchandise in anticipation of the Christmas shopping season. I found Cabbage Patch babies and dolls at 30% off as well as tons of the Polly Pocket, My Little Pony, and Littlest Pet Shop toys on clearance as well. I also checked out the Lego aisle and found a couple of the larger sets on clearance. Children’s clothes were marked down 50% to 75% off, with the racks just piled full. Red stickers were everywhere! Great time to be hunting those bargains.

This is a fairly new store so it doesn’t seem like they would need to redo the place already. Anyway, I noticed a large number of items on clearance. Lots of kids clothing (both babies and bigger kids) with big 50% off signs on the racks. Lots and lots of items on the end caps in all departments with huge clearance signs. The lesson here is that if your local Target is remodeling start looking for the clearance finds!

Pay attention to the “balloons” that are in aisles. Generally there are Sale, New Item, Special, and the most important for clearance shoppers: Price Cut.

I decided to check this out for myself and sure enough I found that most items which were marked with a Price Cut did eventually begin the clearance cycle. To find the price bubbles, just look down the aisles when you are at Target. You’ll see these little half circles by the items which stick out just a tiny bit so they call your attention to it. When you find ones that say “price cut” those items are on track for clearance if they do not sell.

Additionally, some price cut items are listed in the Sunday sale ads. More popular merchandise will be sold quickly at the price cut level but I know from past experience that you can find really great clearance deals. It pays to track an item you are interested in knowing there is a chance of getting it at a clearance price. Also, if you see that an item you want has gone to clearance and your store doesn’t have any more, check another local Target. In some stores merchandise will go really quickly but another Target 5 miles away may be stocked full with the same item.

Found that a lot more children’s clothes had been clearanced to 50% off. These included all the girl’s Easter dresses and sweaters and my store still had lots to choose from. There were full racks of children’s clothing at 75% off, mostly fleece sweaters and sweat type pants.

In the jewelry department lots of necklaces, pendants, earrings, and bracelets were clearanced to 30% off. Some Timex watches clearanced to 75% off. Might be a good time to look for Mother’s Day or graduation gifts.

The Dollar Spot has been restocked with really cute gardening items for kids including gloves and seed starter packets.

My store had tons of baskets, plastic eggs, stuffed toys, and candy. I purchased several bags of the Starburst jelly beans (a favorite in our house) for 49 cents per bag. This is the time now to purchase the baskets and plastic eggs for next Easter.

Other clearance items in the store were the Dollar Spot bins at 75% off and a large assortment of children’s winter clothing including jackets and fleece pants at 75% off. Girls Easter dresses were still only 30% off.

Seems that the new Proenza Schouler line at Target is doing well over on Ebay. I’ve often wondered how people do reselling clothing on Ebay. Apparently, if you are fashion minded, you can do well.

Of course, when I visited my Target today I checked out the clothing department to see if they had anything from this clothing line. Sure enough, there were several racks of the clothing, and some of it was even at 50% off. Yikes! If I was more fashion conscious I think I would give this a try - purchasing some of the clothing at 75% off and then placing it on Ebay. I think for now I will just keep checking over on Ebay how Proenza Schouler is selling - which items and for how much. Might just be something I may try in the future.

I usually make a brief scan of all the end caps (those are the ends of aisles) to see what types of items are on clearance, but I make sure I scan the regular aisles as well, because I tend to find the better clearance deals in the regular aisles. Here is a list of items I saw on yesterday’s trip:

1. Wirebound notebooks of all sizes. Ranging from 30% to 50% off.

2. Scrapbook furniture, the modular cube kinds, on clearance for 50% off.

3. Expensive perfume and colognes in the plastic packaging (i.e. Red Door, Drakkar, etc.) were 75% off but not many were left.

4. All types of Cover Girl cosmetics on clearance for 50% off.

5. Miscellaneous bedding, tableclothes, window treatments, and towels ranging from 50% to 75% off.

6. Burts Bees products were 75% off (check the cosmetic endcaps for these items).

The Target Dollar Spot had the Valentine merchandise at 75% off, though there was not much stuff left.  The Curious George merchandise was also 75% off.

In other areas of the store I saw lots of sheet sets, comforters, decorator pillows, and other decorative accessories on 30% to 50% clearance.  Global Bazaar merchandise was 50% off but not much left at my store.

Tennis Accessories:  Kid tennis racquets, Sponge Bob racquets, Sponge Bob tennis balls.

Baseball Accessories:  Helmet and pad set, Little League hitting DVD, Little League pitching DVD.

Misc:  Razor scooter, 8-ball helmet, Adidas soccer ball.  Remember to check the bike racks for a variety of bikes that are on clearance now.

1.  Bicycles.  A large variety of bikes for men, women, and children.  Some of these may be marked with red clearance stickers, but some may not be.  Get a target employee to scan the prices for you.  You’ll have to hunt for these; think of it as a treasure hunt!

2.  Tents and sleeping bags.  Adult and youth sizes are on clearance, some as much as 75% off.  Again, you’ll need to scour the aisles and use the scanner to check for clearance prices.

3.  Gametables like the foosball and air hockey.  They are a little bit harder to find, though, as most had been sold in January. 

4.   Inflatable beds and lounge chairs.  These are also in the camping aisles.

In the cereal and grocery aisles I found several brands of cereal on clearance:  South Beach Toasted Wheats Cereal - $2.71; Total Vanilla Yogurt flavored cereal - $2.54; Kelloggs Fruit Harvest Strawberry/Blueberry Cereal - $2.71. 

On the paper goods aisle I found several types of bath tissue on clearance:  The Scott extra soft (12 rolls) was $6.45; Quilted Northern (24 rolls) $5.34; and Target brand bath tissue (24 rolls) $4.83.

In the soap aisle I found: Dove Energy Glow Body Wash - $3.82; Dove Cool Moisture Refreshing Body Wash $3.64; and Olay Complete Body Wash for dry skin $4.58.

In the housewares aisles I found several Christmas themed clearance items, although they are not at 75% or 90% off.  They are the storage boxes by Rubbermaid.  I found the Rubbermaid large ornament box $5.98 and the Rubbermaid low profile ornament box for $5.98.  These prices are 50% off their regular marked prices.

Other houseware items I found include a George Foreman lean mean grilling machine combo which includes a slow cooker for $20.98; Black and Decker Food Processor (500 watts) for $34.98; and a Delonghi Living Innovation combination espresso, cappuccino, and latte coffemaker for $139.30.

1.  Shop early for discounts and sales.  Right now Michaels Crafts is having a huge sale on Christmas decor, everything from pre lit Christmas trees to floral picks and stems, to themed ornaments dimensional holiday lighting, and even animated Christmas figures.

2.  Make your own wreaths, garlands, and centerpieces.  Here is how I make my own Christmas silk wreath.  I also decorate by wrapping tables and lamps with big red bows, and making my own centerpieces by using Christmas ornaments.  Its easy and really does save money.

3.  Take a trip to your dollar store and stock up on wrapping paper, gift bags, and bows.  I’ve found wonderful decorative gift bags at my local dollar store and have used them to decorate a bare corner.  I’ve even hung them on the walls! 

4.  Make a collage of Christmas cards you receive, which makes a great table centerpiece.

I am a real bargain hunter and consider myself pretty good at finding “great deals”. My local Target store is one of the places where I have had the most success. If you didn’t already know, Target has a regular method of clearancing merchandise, and will follow a progression of marking things down to 25%, 50%, 75%, and, yes, even to 90%. What you have to do to find the bargains is to find your particular store’s markdown schedule per area, and be the first one at the store the days of the sale. Apparently, a lot of other people know about these clearance sales, employees and customers alike. I’ve also seen a lot of folks who snatch up everything at 90% off with the intention of selling their stuff on Ebay.

After Christmas the merchandise is all marked down to 50% but it does eventually go to 90% off. It does include Christmas decorations but also things like Christmas gifts too, like the perfume sets, bath sets, even things like car wash kits! All seasonal items go through clearance as well including the patio sets and barbeque grills. Clothing is another great area to watch. I rarely pay full price for clothes for the kids, and my children know if they want something, they’ll have to look for the red clearance sticker. 

Another tip you’ll want to try is scanning everything. Sometimes the clearanced items are not marked but you can find the price at the scanner. Here is a list I have used to get an idea of the clearance schedule. However, each Target store is different so you will have to find out what happens at your store.

Traditional Holiday clearance schedule
50% off day after holiday for three days
75% off fourth day after holiday for three days
90% off seventh day after holiday for 1-2 days.
Other than Christmas this is the schedule used for holiday clearance, including Valentine’s Day, Easter, July 4th, Summer, and Halloween.

Weekly Mark Down Schedule:
-Mon. — Electronics, Kids Clothing and Stationary (Cards, GiftWrap, etc.)
-Tues. — Domestics, Women’s Clothing, Pets and Market (food items)
-Wed. — Men’s Clothing, Toys, Health and Beauty, Lawn & Garden items
-Thur. — House Wares, Lingerie, Shoes, Sporting Goods, Movies, Music, Books, Decor and Luggage
-Fri. — Auto, Cosmetics, Hardware, & Jewelry
