While some of the best sales are still a little more than a month away, great buys can be found in the these types of items:

Fall Colors – Anything that features fall or harvest-themed colors will be featured in clearance sales by the time October rolls around. Look beyond the fall theme to see the actual item. Maybe you know a young engaged couple who is getting married in the summer. If they enjoy warm reds or oranges, you could take advantage of sales and purchase a nice baking dish in one of these colors for their wedding gift.

Halloween Costumes – As Halloween gets closer, costumes just get cheaper and cheaper. If your child isn’t picky about his costume, you can get a great buy on one just before the holiday. Don’t forget about dress-up clothes either; those bargain-priced princess costumes will make perfect gifts for the little princess in your family.

Open-Box Appliances – As new appliances are making their way to sales floors, stores will need to get rid of their old display models. Look for steals at your local department store or specialty stores like Circuit City or Best Buy. Many times, these display models will still have all of the benefits of a full warranty with a greatly diminished price tag.

Tires – Getting your car prepared for winter is slightly easier on your pocketbook when you take advantage of sales at tire retailers. Be sure to call several stores to check prices before committing to one; you can be sure you’ll find at least one sale in your phone list.

Jewelry – Almost any season that doesn’t include a major gift-giving holiday will feature more moderately-priced jewelry. As the holidays get closer you can bet that the stores will raise their prices, so shop early if jewelry is on your shopping list.

Outdoor Accessories or Lighting - If you’ve always dreamed of twinkle lights hovering over your patio or enjoying a glass of ice tea while sitting on a pretty outside bench, this is your time of year. Delving through the remaining stock at hardware stores, furniture retailers, or department stores is sure to reveal a bargain or two that you’ll be able to enjoy next spring.

The key to finding these bargains is looking at off-season merchandise.

Grills – Grill sales are prevalent throughout the summer months as people enjoy family dining outdoors. By February, however, the demand for outdoor cooking equipment is pretty low. Expect to find these items at extremely discounted prices at your local retailer.

Boats – Like cars, new models of boats are released according to the calendar year. Unlike cars, however, boats do not enjoy year-round demand from their customers. With many harbors frozen during February’s cold temperatures, boat prices are usually lowest throughout the winter months.

Winter Clothing & Accessories – As consumers’ minds start to turn from cold, winter weather to thoughts of a much warmer spring day, retailers’ sales floors begin to reflect the move to spring products. Heavy outerwear displays convert to brightly colored swimsuit displays. Stocking hats designed to keep your ears and head warm give way to sunglasses and floppy hats. Faced with the need to get their winter stock out of their stores, retailers offer huge discounts during February on any of their remaining winter apparel.

Furniture – Many manufacturers release new models of furniture after the first of the year. You will find that furniture centers are often willing to offer deep price cuts on the old models to make room for incoming furniture shipments.

Appliances – Like furniture, appliance manufacturers release new models of their equipment during the winter months. Be sure to watch the appliance centers at retailers such as Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Best Buy for those tell-tale yellow clearance tags.

Patient shoppers will find that February is the best month to make many of their large purchases. Perhaps you’ve been dreaming about family barbecues or enjoying a movie on a cushier couch only to be discouraged by the high price tag associated with your dream. Try checking back in with your local stores to see how last year’s items are priced now. If you’ve been lusting for that stainless steel grill or comfy sofa, you may just find that the price has been dropped to something within your price range.

There was a lot of Christmas merchandise left, so I decided to wait until the items go to 75% off. At that time, I’ll be looking to stock up on gift wrap, tags, bows, and Christmas cards for next year.

In the Target I was at yesterday the big bargains were in children’s clothing. I found racks and racks of items at 50% off so it was fairly easy to stock up on items for the children for next Winter.

I also found 50% markdowns in the toy aisles. These will also go to 75% off in the next few weeks so I will be watching those aisles as well, looking to purchase birthday gifts and to replenish the gift closet.

Something things to hunt for that are also 50% off include the Christmas themed paper towels, Hello Kitty makeup and cosmetic sets, some flannel sheet sets, flatware sets, kid holiday themed t-shirts, and Gladware plastic containers.

I will also be watching the Christmas candy items for anything that can be used to be put into Valentine gift bags or Easter baskets.

Now that the month of April is nearly halfway gone, seasonal items (i.e. winter clothing) are beginning to get heavily discounted. I’ve been scanning the clearance aisles at my local stores to see what items are appearing there - the winter fashions are really starting to get their prices reduced so now is the time to make an assessment of your needs for next year, and plan accordingly. Here are the techniques I use to shop for discounted seasonal items:

1. Develop a list of desired items including colors and sizes. I can’t remember everyone’s shirt, pant, and shoe size, or what items they will need for next year. I keep a list handy in my purse which shows current sizes and an estimate for seasonal clothing needs. I developed this list by going through our current winter clothing to see what we have and what we will need. Right now I am buying one size larger for the kids to be used for next winter. Even though we live in Florida, I do find that the kids need heavier jackets that they use pretty much only in December, January and February. Since they’ve all outgrown the jackets they wore this year, I will be looking for ones for next year as well as other items to be worn during the colder months.

2. Make regular trips through the clearance racks. Since the items can vary from week to week, it is a good idea to make this a habit. Target has been discounting jackets, fleece wear, long sleeve shirts, and other clothing meant to be worn in the colder weather. I’ve seen quite a few items in the children’s department at 50% off and women’s and men’s clothing and jackets as well. The list I made in #1 above helps me out when I am confronted with all those clearance racks just filled to the brim with clothing.

3. Check your local thrift stores such as Goodwill and Salvation Army. Many people are spring cleaning and donating items which they don’t want anymore. You can find wonderful deals on jackets and sweaters and items for winter related sports such as ski bibs, vests, and jackets. The time to buy them is now, because you won’t find nearly the same selection once next fall comes.

4. Search for garage sales, especially community sales or church garage sales. Every spring we see a large amount of garage sales and thrift sales hosted by a variety of neighborhoods or local churches. Again, people are selling and/or donating items from this past winter that they won’t use again, and many times you can find wonderful deals. Be sure to get there early though because the best bargains go fast!

5. Monitor your local Freecycle group. I’ve picked up several bags of winter related clothing for my kids that were offered by other freecyclers whose children had outgrown their clothing. Also consider posting a “needed” request to Freecycle - you may be surprised at the amount of offers you will receive.

1.  Look for the clearance priced candy such as plain chocolates and anything that might not be decorated with a Christmas theme.  I found Dove chocolates and Ghirardelli chocolates at 50% clearance at Target.  These items can be placed into a plain glass jar or combined into a gift basket. 

2.  Search for plain red candies, red candles, red bows and ribbons.  You can use these items to decorate.

3.  Look for plain red gift wrap or red gift bags which can be used to wrap or hold Valentine’s Day gifts.

4.  There are many scented candles on clearance now.  Check the regular candle aisles of Target to hunt for those red clearance stickers. 

5.  If you are giving a Valentine gift for a child, be sure to check out the toy clearance aisles.  There are many toys that are currently being clearanced from 30% to 50% off.  Some of these will even be further discounted to 75% off.

Black Box Cosmetics gift sets.  These include Stepping Out Pedicure Vanity, Party Essentials Cosmetics, and Cosmetic Bags.

The red boxed gifts with items like a tie rack, flashlight radio, bookends, memo board, rechargeable lantern with am/fm radio, travel cooler and warmer, 8-in-1 vacuum and air compressor, and a shower clock radio.

Lots of candles in all types of colors and scents.  Coffee gift sets and candy tins.  Holiday tablecloths and table runners, although in solid colors like burgandy and cream that do not look like holiday decor only. 

Bagged candy such as hershey kisses, dove chocolates, and Ghirardelli chocolates.  (Would make great Valentine’s Day presents). 

Wicker baskets and plain white gift boxes. 

Walnut finish curio cabinet.

Red boxed home decor items such as a wooden spice rack.

When in doubt, remember to scan the item.  You may need to search through the different departments throughout the store to find some of the items.  My local Target has them combined in one area.

The store was very busy.  Lots of bargain hunters but mostly the Target employees were very visible in every department, placing those lovely red clearance stickers on tons of items.   There were lots of Christmas items in every department, candles, candy, red gift boxed sets, wrap, outdoor decorations, lights, trees, gift bags.  The special kids fragrance kits were 50% off (Strawberry Shortcake, Hello Kitty, etc.).  There were little entire shelves full of holiday linens including linen table covers, chair covers, table runners, and napkins.  The flannel sheets sets (Christmas themed) were also 50% off.  My overall assessment is that there will be plenty of merchandise to choose from when the 75% off starts which, according to my estimates, will be this Friday or Saturday.  I will be at my Target at opening time on Friday to see if the items go to 75% off.

I also make a list of any holiday decorations or crafts that I would like for the next Christmas and search for those during the clearance sales as well. 

At Target, I like to stock up on the candy that goes to 75% off and use that for Valentine gift giving.  I also use the plain red bags and any other plain red items for Valentine’s gifts.  If I find stocking stuffers left over (that are not Christmas themed), then I will purchase those at 75% off to put into Easter Baskets.

Toys are eventually going to be clearanced, but may not start the day after Christmas.  The game tables like the air hockey and foosball tables will go on clearance as will the bikes, outdoor gear, and gift sets.  Be sure to scan items to check for clearance finds.
