New Year’s Eve parties are always fun. Everyone is always hopeful and festive as they plan and dream about what the next year will hold. Why wouldn’t you want to share that fun with your friends and family?
Unfortunately, the cost of hosting a party can deter a lot of people from throwing a New Year’s Eve party. Don’t let yourself become one of those people. You can plan a New Year’s party on a budget by following some of these tips.
Forget large, formal dinners. Since many New Year’s Eve parties start later in the evening, you can get away with simply serving a spread of appetizers. Plan on serving fun foods like appetizer pizzas, chips and dips, stuffed mushrooms, or potato bites.
Use the internet to send invitations. Websites like Evites make it easier than ever to get the word out about your party. You don’t need to spend a lot of money for printed invitations. Send an Evite to everyone you would like to invite to the party. If there is anyone in your group who isn’t internet-savvy, you can always make a special phone call to invite him.
Use board games for entertainment. What could be more fun than enjoying a night of games with your favorite people? Ask everyone to bring their favorite game with them so that you have a wide variety of games to choose from. Trivia games like the “Scene It” line of games are perfect for party settings.
Pare down your Christmas decorations for party décor. Although you might not want to keep your Christmas tree up for your New Year’s party, you could keep some twinkle lights and festive dishes out. White lights give any room a more romantic, magical feeling. Colored glass lends a certain elegance to your party.
Keep wine/liquor costs to a minimum. Ask each guest (or couple) to bring a bottle of wine or the ingredients to a favorite drink with them to the party. This will allow everyone to share the cost of the most expensive part of any New Year’s party.

Additional tips–for your appetizers, stay away from cheese trays, fruit trasy, nut trays, any kind of “tray”.
That is, stay away from the store-bought kind. Need a cheese tray? Buy four different kinds of block cheese, some leaf lettuce, and some crackers. Get out the knife and start cutting.
You’d be surprised at how much you can save.
Second tip–make it BYOB, Bring Your Own Booze.
Depending on the type of party you have, alcohol can easily be the most expensive piece. Go this route and you’ll save tons.
Plus, if your friends are cool, they won’t mind a bit.
