Have you been looking for fun activities to get the kids into your family’s Thanksgiving festivities? I want the kids to understand what the meaning behind Thanksgiving is, as well as enjoying the holiday. And, to be honest, as I put the final touches on our family meal, I need to find ways to keep the kids amused and out of my kitchen.
So, I’ve come up with a list of projects that I think we will try to incorporate into this year’s Thanksgiving celebrations. Some are craft projects, while others are ways to incorporate the holiday into our normally family time. This year, I am determined that Thanksgiving will have new meaning for our family.
Building a chain of Thanksgiving. Along the theme of helping the kids understand the meaning of Thanksgiving, I’ve planned a craft project that will allow the kids to think about what we have to be thankful for. Each member of the family will receive five strips of colored paper. Each of us will, then, write down something that we are thankful for this year. (I will, of course, help the younger ones write on their strips.) After we’re all done writing, I am going to have the kids paste the strips into a traditional paper chain and hang it from our staircase.
Reading Thanksgiving-themed books. Bedtime stories are really big in our house, so I plan to build a little Thanksgiving excitement by working it into our story time. Check out your local library; I bet you’ll be surprised to see how many Thanksgiving stories you have to choose from.
Crafting a Thanksgiving turkey. While I’m making a turkey in the kitchen, I thought the kids might enjoy making turkeys of their own. I’ve got a stash of construction paper, glue, and glitter ready to go. We’ll trace our hands and feet to make the pieces of our turkey, glue them together, and decorate them.
Sharing our thankful thoughts. Because we are having so many guests on Thanksgiving, we plan to share our thankful thoughts with each other at dinner on the day before Thanksgiving. I hope to discuss the things we wrote on our chain links with each other and help the kids understand how lucky we are.
