Everyone loves to decorate their home for the holidays, don’t they? I love the way my house looks throughout the year, but when it’s decorated for the holidays, my home takes on a special shimmer. Of course, my holiday decorating, like everything else in my life, has to be done on a budget. Fortunately, I’ve got a few frugal tips that I can put to use while I’m decorating.
Clean the house and condense regular décor. If your holiday décor is shrouded by dusty cobwebs and a wide array of everyday décor items, it won’t make the impression you hope that it will. Begin your holiday decorating by wiping your home’s slate clean. Cleaning and packing away extraneous items won’t cost a dime, and they will allow your holiday décor to really shine.
Select a theme or focal color. Some of the most striking holiday showpieces are comprised of inexpensive elements that are carefully coordinated. Small décor pieces that are unified by color or theme will read as one elaborate display. If you don’t have enough items to keep a coherent theme throughout your entire home (or if you simply want a little variety in your décor), you can always opt to use a different them or focal color in each room.
Wrap wall hangings in wrapping paper. You don’t have to buy a bunch of holiday-themed pictures to cover your walls during the holiday season. An inexpensive way to adorn your walls is to wrap your pictures in holiday gift wrap. You can even buy paper that matches your decorating theme. Add a coordinating bow for a truly festive look.
Use simple glass ornaments for centerpieces. Fresh flower arrangements are expensive and fade too quickly to use in your décor regularly. On the other hand, silk flower arrangements are expensive, too. A low cost alternative to floral arrangements are arrangements crafted from ornaments. Place several ornaments into a stylish glass bowl or a large open-mouthed vase for instant décor. Simple balls are available very cheaply in a wide assortment of colors.
Paint seasonal shapes on your home’s windows. Begin by adding a little dish soap to a bottle of acrylic paint. You can use any paint you want, but try to coordinate it with the rest of your decorating. Then, using a sponge paintbrush, you can embellish your home’s windows. Christmas trees, presents, and stars are great Christmas shapes to use. If you aren’t gifted at painting, you can always use a simple stencil to guide your shape. Please note that your window decorations will wash off with a little window cleaner after the holidays have passed.

We usually try to do a “mood” for holiday entertaining. Utilize the lites from the tree, light some candles, dim some lights, and you’ve got yourself a house decorated for free.
