House Renovation on a Budget

October 12th, 2009 · 2 Comments

House renovation projects have become increasingly popular with so many people deciding to stay in their current homes rather than upgrading to newer, larger ones. Renovations allow you to turn your house into the home of your dreams without taking on a larger mortgage payment. House renovation projects really pay off, though, when you manage to keep your projects on a budget.

Keeping a house renovation project under budget can be difficult for some homeowners. Specialized tools can be costly. The price of supplies like paint, tile or wood can add up quickly. And, when you least expect it, unbudgeted costs can surprise you in the middle of your project. It’s no wonder that so many renovators end up going over budget.

The first key to key to keep your home renovation under budget is planning. Plan everything. Make a list of all the things you plan to do and everything you will need to accomplish your goals. You should also go to home improvement centers to get a genuine feel for the cost of your supplies and materials. Finally, don’t forget to budget a few dollars for unexpected repairs and accidents. Having a plan will allow you to shop around for good prices on your purchases and keep you from having to make desperate purchases at the last minute.

Another thing you can do to keep your home renovation budget low is to rent special tools rather than buying them. When we decided to tackle laying a tile floor, for instance, we opted to rent a tile saw for a weekend. For under $50 we were able to use the saw that the professional tile folks would use. We were much happier using the power saw than we would have been trying to use a manual-style tile cutter. Your local tool rental company will have anything you could possibly need for your project.

Finally, don’t be afraid to use the internet to get a good price on your materials. You can purchase everything from flooring to lighting fixtures on the internet these days and often get a much better price than you would at a traditional design center. You can also sign up for a 10% off coupon at Lowes.com to save on your in-store purchases. Combine every discount you can find to help stretch your dollar as far as it will go.

Renting tools is a huge savings—and one of the most convenient things in the world.

Utilize friends–lots of times they’ll love to help out, can at least offer up some good advice, and possible some “free” tool rentals.

Research–you can figure out better ways of doing things by consulting the Internet. Even when I start a project I know exactly how to do, I still do a little Google search just to see what else has popped up out there.
