Frugal October Food Finds

October 13th, 2009 · No Comments

October can be an “in-between” time at many grocery stores. It’s still too early to see great sales on the stereotypical holiday bargains like hams, turkeys, or baking supplies. However, with summer long gone, you also don’t see the specials that feature hot dogs, buns, and other summer foods.

Don’t be too discouraged, though. If you’re looking to build up some of your staple items, October is a great month. Here are some of the things you can expect WILL be on sale:

Breakfast Cereals – In the absence of other sales, grocery stores seem to fall back on sales on various types of cold cereal. My favorite store has Kellogg’s cereals on sale this week. Don’t forget to consider the non-breakfast uses you might have for cereals, too, as you make your shopping list. Corn flakes can be used in a ton of recipes.

Canned Fruit/Vegetables – Grocery store sales in October often include great prices on bulk packs of canned fruits or vegetables. Stock up now on favorites like corn, green beans, peas, and pineapples. You’ll be glad to have these side dishes to turn to when you need to pull a dinner together quickly.

Soups – As the chill of winter starts to make its way into our thoughts, my family is ready to start enjoying some warm meals. Fortunately, our grocery store makes preparing these meals easy by offering some great deals on canned soups. Use these soups as a base for heartier soups you create or as a quick, warm lunch for you and the kids.

Late Season Fresh Veggies – Do you like green beans, zucchini or squash? If you said yes, October is your month. These late season vegetables can be found at great prices at grocery stores this time of year. You should also look for bell peppers or roma tomatoes. They’ll add great flavor to your meals.

Snack Foods – Although I don’t usually advocate a lot of snack foods like chips and crackers because they’re so expensive, you can mitigate some of that cost by purchasing some this month. Look for good buys on things like Cheez-its, potato chips, and other snack foods.
