Baby gifts are one of my favorite items to shop for. Selecting tiny little blankets or garments always reminds me of the days when my kids were tiny little things. Whether I’m looking for a girl gift, a boy gift, or a gender-neutral gift, I am always overwhelmed by how many cute or precious items that are available.
Throwing budget into your considerations, though, can make the whole gift selection process a little tougher. There are so many sweet baby items out there that come with a huge price tag. How will you reconcile your gift-giving wishes with your budget? I think these baby gift ideas will help.
Baby blankets – Any mom will tell you that you can never have too many blankets on hand. Baby food, as well as less savory baby messes, always seems to make its way onto blankets. Before she knows it, Mom will need to get a new blanket out. Look for inexpensive blankets at your favorite discount store.
Onesies – Cute baby outfits can be tempting in the stores, but the reality is that many babies spend most of their time in onesies in one form or another. Choose long-sleeved or short-sleeved garments based upon the season the baby is born in.
Baby Bottles – Bottles are another thing that moms always seem to need. Even mothers who breast feed may choose to express some milk and feed it to the baby in a bottle. An assortment of bottles (and bottle accessories) can make a fun and functional gift.
Whimsical Photo Frame – You know that Mom and Dad are going to be taking a lot of pictures when the new baby arrives. Give them a place to display one of their favorite pictures by giving them an attractive photo frame. Stores like Michael’s or Hobby Lobby offer frames of all types at very affordable prices.
The Gift of Time – New moms always need a little more time to keep their households running. Although you can’t add any more time to the clock, you can help them get things done. Provide the mom-to-be with coupons for laundry assistance, errand-running, and any other tasks you’re willing to help out with. A home computer can aid you with making attractive coupons.

Many of the custom photo gifts you can make online at lifephoto.com are inexpensive and will mean a great deal to the mom and dad. They’ll last a lifetime, but take only minutes to create.
Photos you may have of baby’s first birthday, first Christmas or other similar focus can be made into wonderful calendars or even photo memory books.
A 4″x6″ photo memory book — with 20 pages of photos — costs only $6.95. An 8″x8″ or 9″x6″ is only $12.95. You can easily upload photos, add captions and use a auto-layout for the pages. Plus you can re-adjust the pages if you wish. 8″x12″ books are just $19.95. Lifephoto has a professional photo lab (where the wedding and portrait photographers send their work), so you are ensured of fine quality reproduction quality paper with inks.
Not expensive. Easy to do. Excellent quality. Long-lasting photo memory gifts.

Honestly, I say forgo photo frames and give a package of diapers. With digital photos, I display my babies’ photos on Facebook, not my mantle, but a package of diapers is a luxury for this cloth diaper scrubbing mom.

When I read the title of your post, I hate to admit it, but the first thing that came to my mind was “re-gift”.
I am sorry to say, but I would simply have to suggest this route. Of course, only for current parents.
After my wife and I had our first child, we found ourselves with soooooooooo much stuff that we got as gifts that we would simply never use, that we just ended up using it for these occasions.
I think we still did buy something brand new for the Mom, but we also wrapped up and threw in 2-3 other items from what we received.
Hope I’m not being politically incorrect, just trying to be realistic about the whole thing.

To go along with what David said, I can tell you that the thing that is getting re-gifted from all the stuff we recently received (we are new parents) are those super cute newborn or 0-3 month outfits. Everyone loves to buy them, but babies grow out of them so fast, and we already had plenty of clothes, so we just never took the tags off and squirreled them away for our next gift giving occasion.
What would a parent really love to get? DIAPERS and WIPES! You can get good deals for these if you watch for sales and combine them with coupons, so you don’t have to pay full retail.
