Packing a Frugal (but Healthy) School Lunch

The ability to pack a tasty, but frugal, school lunch for your kids will help you score major points with your kids this fall. When other kids are trading their lunches to their friends, your kids will be the envy of their classmates. First, however, you’ve got to learn how to pack these in-demand lunches.

The beginning to carrying lunches to school has to be the container. A canvas bag with Velcro is a simple option. With less than a yard of fabric, you can whip up a bag that is as unique as your little one. An insulated bag works nicely when you need to control the temperature of the lunch. If it needs to stay cold, you can always drop a freezer pack into the bag.

The centerpiece of any lunch is usually a sandwich. After awhile, though, sandwiches can seem pretty tired. Try working other healthy alternatives into your kids’ lunchboxes. Making roll-ups from pita bread or tortilla shells can be a nice break from the traditional sandwich. Occasionally, I even slip a container with leftovers from last night’s dinner into the mix.

You’ll also want to include a snack item or two in your child’s lunch. An inexpensive, yet healthy, option could be fresh veggies. Carrots and celery are an easy choice. Pretzels are a good alternative to potato chips, and pickles have a very satisfying crunch to them.

You may want to include a dessert item in your child’s lunch, as well. Before you drop in a candy bar or other sugar-laden treat, stop to consider some more natural sources of sugar. Fruit slices, granola bars, or a cup of yogurt are sweet enough to keep your little ones happy, but healthy enough to keep you happy.

Finally, don’t forget to solicit your kids’ opinions when you are looking for lunch ideas for them. Every kid wants to know that he gets a vote about what he eats. I’ve found, though, that I prefer to give my kids an “either/or” option. This ensures that their choices are items that I have available for them.

The problem I have is that my kids really aren’t carb eaters (i.e. we throw out a LOT of sandwiches!) and they don’t exactly have access to a microwave, so I’m usually left struggling! Any suggestions?

That’s why I pack lunch every day to work. I always add healthy fruits and vegetable.
