I’ve written quite a bit about the back to school sales. With school nearly starting, we’ve pretty much finished purchasing all our supplies. Back to school shopping is always an exciting experience in our house. I never stop being amused at how thrilled my kids are to see the list of approved supplies for their next year at school. I hear shouts of “I get to use markers this year!” or “We’re using pens now!”
What the kids don’t realize is that their excitement is often paired with my concern about keeping the cost of all of those school supplies under control. I certainly don’t want to underscore their excitement to start a new school year, but I don’t want to spend more than I have to spend, either.
Wal-mart and Target are always my first stops for buying back to school supplies. They usually feature everything the kids need in their ads during the end of August. The crowd there, however, is atrocious. I have a tough time herding the little ones in and out of those aisles at this time of year.
If you’re willing to forego Wal-mart or Target, you can really stretch your back to school dollars. I’ve been a fan of CVS and their rewards card for a while now. This year, though, I’ve found that their savings extend into the realm of school supplies. I found backpacks at a great price ($9.99) and at a buy one get one free offer. How cool is that? The backpacks even feature popular licensed characters so my kids were thrilled.
If you’ve got older kids, I think a trip to your local Staples may also be a good idea. I found great prices there on copy paper. (I hate those desperate moments where you realize that you need to print something and you’re out of paper.) They also have a wide variety of scientific calculators, highlighters, and composition notebooks. Your high school or college student will be totally prepared for the first day of school.
The savings don’t end when the kids start school either. Target usually begins to deeply discount any remaining school supplies to get ready to display their Fall and Halloween merchandise. We’ve found lunch totes, notebooks, and other school supply related items for as much as 75% to 90% off a few weeks into the school year.

The good thing about back to school sales is the fact that even if you are no longer a student you can take advantage of this sale to get some fairly cheap office supplies such as pens, staplers, and what not.
Great Post
And, a lot of retailers have unbelievale deals on laptops during this time of year. When I say unbelievable, I mean unbelievable.
If the crowds at Target and Walmart are too much…Walgreens and Office Depot usually have some pretty siginificant discounts.
I don’t even have kids in school yet and I took full advantage of the savings.
