Life insurance is never a fun topic. Who wants to think about their own death or the death of their loved ones? Unfortunately, it is a necessary topic for those who want to ensure that their loved ones are cared for at all times. Having adequate life insurance will protect your family at a time when they need protection the most.
The question isn’t really whether or not you need life insurance. Instead, you must know what factors you should consider as you decide how much life insurance you need. There is no pre-determined formula to give you a magic number; you’ll need to weigh each of these factors as you make your decision.
Dependents – Who needs your income? Do you have a husband or wife? How many children do you have? A single person’s life insurance needs are very different than a person with a large family. The size of your family has to be a major consideration in your life insurance needs.
Debt – The amount of debt you have also weighs heavily into any life insurance decisions. Do you owe a great deal on your home? Will your spouse be able to carry that debt without you? Many families strive to maintain enough life insurance to remove any debt from their finances so that their surviving spouse won’t have to deal with it.
Age – I’m not referring to your own age here; instead, I’m referring to the age of your dependents. If your children are in their twenties, you probably don’t need to consider them in your life insurance decisions. They are old enough to look after themselves. On the other hand, if you have toddlers, you may need your life insurance to provide for them for many years. You’ll almost certainly want to bump up your insurance coverage.
Insurance Types – I’ve heard a lot of dispute about different types of life insurance. Some advocate a whole life insurance policy. Others prefer simpler term life insurance. Whichever choice you make, please be certain that you understand all of your options and that you are choosing the one that is best for you. Take a little time to think it over as you make your decision.

I object to the “question isn’t really whether or not you need life insurance” line. If you have no dependants and will not have any that changes things – other than that it’s a spouse or partner you have to worry about. And if you have enough saved and everything planned….
