Even though gas prices are much lower than they were at this time last year, it’s still important to focus on saving on gas. Unfortunately, as summer approaches you may find yourself busier and spending more time in the car. Kids have so many functions to attend, and there are always summer vacations to consider. If you’re going to keep saving money on gas for your car, you’re going to need to a few tricks up your sleeve.
The easiest thing you can do to save money on gas is to take all of that extra stuff out of your car. Removing a few extra pounds will help your car eke more mileage out of each gallon of gasoline you put into it. As the kids pile out of the car each day, remind them to grab their stuff. Your car will look neater, and you’ll save money.
Arranging carpools will help you and other parents save time and money. Are your kids going to the park to meet friends? Rather than driving the kids to meet their friends separately, you could take turns with the friends’ parents chauffeuring the kids. The other parents will appreciate your offer to share driving duty. You’ll get to know your kids’ friends a little better, too.
Planning your errands ahead of time can help you conserve gas. Don’t zigzag all over town doing your errands. Group them together, instead, to get as much done as quickly as possible. A “to do” list will go along way towards helping you become as efficient as possible.
Avoid skimping on scheduled maintenance. A car that runs well uses less gas, so don’t be tempted to skip maintenance work on your car to save a few bucks. Regularly changing your car’s oil and keeping the car’s tires aired up properly are cheap and easy things you can do to keep your car running great. Your local mechanic can also advise you about tune-ups or other repairs your car may need. Spending a few dollars on your car at the repair shop could return huge savings at the pump.

We recently moved overseas and have been shocked to see how much they are selling gas for over here (SE Europe). It’s prohibitive. Add in the insurance and parking costs in this city and I am surprised than anyone drives much at all. Those who do tend to follow a lot of the tips above, I notice.
