I don’t know about you, but the cabinet we keep our medicines in needs a periodic cleaning. After a while I can barely make my way through the bottles of pain relief, assorted half empty band-aid boxes, and a multitude of antacid products. Sometimes I think I have a particular medication on hand, but when I need it I can’t find it and have to make a last minute run to the store where I wind up paying last minute prices. By planning ahead and purchasing the needed items at a discount I can save money.
I usually start by reviewing each medication’s expiration date. If the date has passed, then I dispose of the medicine in an appropriate way. I take inventory as I work through the cabinet, writing down what medicines I need to replenish immediately, and what ones we’ll need soon. Then, I can watch the sales and purchase what I need at a discount.
To keep the medicines organized, I keep them in their original boxes. It helps since we have several children and it can be confusing with the different medications and doses required. Any prescription medications are tossed when the child has finished taking it. Since I do have young children, I keep all medicines in a place where the children cannot access them.
I also keep our first aid supplies in the cabinet. I go through these and make an assessment regarding needs for bandages, first aid cream, etc. I keep this list of needed items in my purse so when I am shopping and see something on sale, I can quickly check to see if it is on the list of needs.
