How to Save When Shopping at Health Food Stores

May 12th, 2009 · 3 Comments

Is it possible to shop healthy and save money at the same time? Maybe you like to shop at health food stores and have reconciled yourself to the fact that you just can’t buy groceries cheaply. While I applaud your dedication to serving only the healthiest food for your family, I think you can still save money on your monthly food expenditures.

You shouldn’t assume, first of all, that everything is more expensive at your local health food store. These stores have sales, just like any other grocery store. Watch the prices for your favorite items and stock up when they are on sale.

You also shouldn’t take it for granted that major, national chains are the most economical health food stores out there. Take the time to explore the locally-owned stores in your neck of the wood. Check out their prices and see how they compare to the big chain stores. You may be pleasantly surprised to find that they are cheaper; you may even find that shopping at local stores in more enjoyable.

Many health food stores feature bulk bin sections that allow you to purchase foods you like without the extra packaging you don’t need. You can buy the exact quantity you need and get your product cheaper. I love the idea of getting a bulk price without having to worry that I bought more than I can use.

Finally, many health food stores offer samples of some of their products. If you’re thinking about trying a new product, but aren’t sure that your family will like it, samples are a great way to go. You get to taste it and ask questions about how it’s prepared. Then, when you get home, you will already have an idea how it will fit into your meal plans.

Many of the same tools that you use to shop at the standard, run-of-the-mill grocery store are useful when shopping at health food stores. Compare prices, take advantage of sales, and don’t forget to use coupons. With a little extra effort, you can keep your grocery bills under control and serve food that you can be proud of.

They tend to always be more expensive and should not be the main source of where you buy food, but the more luxury items you can afford. You can find healthy food at any local supermarket, just not the specialty items.

My local fruit & veg market is way cheaper than and supermarket chain. Also the food is fresher and tastier.
