Earn Extra Money with Your Hobbies

May 11th, 2009 · 6 Comments

Many people long for a way to earn extra money with their hobbies. Isn’t finding a way to get paid for the things you love to do a dreamy idea? Maybe you already have a hobby in mind, but you’re afraid to take that first leap. Getting inspired to start a business based on your talents is a no-brainer. The big question is how to earn extra cash without spending a lot of money. Here are a few tips to get you started down this entrepreneurial path.

Start small. If you’re hoping to earn extra money, the last thing you need to do is make a huge cash investment that doesn’t pay off. Easing your way into your new business venture allows you to experiment without spending big. For instance, if you’re selling your handcrafted items, try selling a handful of items before you splurge on enough materials to fill a shop. If your new business needs advertising, try inexpensive flyers distributed around the neighborhood.

Do your own work. Hiring people to get your new venture off the ground will quickly eat up all of your profits. Instead, commit to doing as much as you can yourself. Design your own logo. Distribute your own flyers. By doing as much work as you can, you can keep all of that hard-earned money once it starts rolling in.

Take advantage of everyone you know. Now, I’m not suggesting that you really abuse your friends and family. What you should do, though, is tell everyone you know about your business. Then, ask them to tell the people they know. Word of mouth advertising is powerful and it’s free. Don’t be too timid to ask people to talk about you.

Don’t neglect legal matters. Although I’m a big advocate of doing as much for your business by yourself as you can, there is one area I wouldn’t skimp in: the accounting. Consult with an accountant early on to find out what your legal requirements are. Do you need to file for a separate tax id number? What should you do about sales taxes? If you’re serious about turning your hobby into extra money, you should protect yourself by making sure you’re in compliance with all of the legal requirements in your city/state.

Side income is a great thing to have an doing something on the side especially if you enjoy it is a great way to make some. It is very easy and cheap to set up a website these days so that may be the first route to take.

I do computer/network/server work for small businesses on the side. Pays quite well.

I would like to branch out into more website design for churches and bible non-profits…so we’ll see how that goes!

I agree – making money doing something you LOVE is absolutely awesome. I used to garage sale around my area, looking for items in great shape and then resell them on ebay. I loved it! And I was able to make extra income to stay home with my kids!
