Spring cleaning is one of my favorite parts of spring. There is nothing quite like opening up the windows in our house and giving our house a good cleaning. A freshly cleaned home is so satisfying and it seems like it wouldn’t quite be Spring without my annual spring cleaning ritual.
What I don’t like about spring cleaning, however, is the hefty bill I can rack up at the local discount store by buying cleaning supplies. Window cleaner, Swiffer dusting tools, and other cleaning supplies can all get pretty expensive pretty quickly. Shouldn’t cleaning be more affordable?
Although I can’t cut the cost of all cleaning supplies out of my budget, here are a few tricks I’ve found to keep those costs under control:
Your vacuum cleaner is your friend. In fact, my husband says that I can work wonders with my vacuum cleaner. You’d be surprised how often you can use your vacuum cleaner as a dusting tool. It does a much better job than those Swiffer dusting kits. I just put the little round brush on the end of my vacuum cleaner’s hose. Then, I run it anywhere that I would have run the duster. Rather than seeing the dust get pushed around, I get to see it go away.
Window cleaning solutions don’t have to be blue. Did you know that you can make your own window cleaner in about five minutes? Try mixing ½ teaspoon of dishwashing detergent, three tablespoons of vinegar, and two cups of warm water together in your old spray bottle. For a few pennies, you’ve just made a cleaner that will make your windows sparkle. Don’t forget; you can also use newspaper instead of paper towels to wipe your windows.
Mother Nature smells much better than Febreze. I totally understand the need to get rid of odors in your house. However, unless there has been some sort of major mishap in your house, opening the windows and letting the breeze blow in will work wonders. You’ll even see your mood rise as you go about your regular routine.
Use commercial cleaners sparingly. When you do want to use a commercial cleaner, try to remember that a little cleaner goes a long way. You don’t have to saturate your kitchen counter with chemicals to get it clean. Your hand on top of a cleaning cloth is the real power behind any cleaner.

I totally agree with your comments. Not only are recipes for household cleaners made from store cupboard staples cheaper than commercially produced products, they are healthier too. No chemicals to create allergies etc. If you’d like some specific recipes I’d be happy to share them. Contact me http://www.itsecotime.com
