Cook Out – Grilling on the Cheap

April 8th, 2009 · No Comments

My thoughts always turn to a cook out at this time of year. Do you love cooking out? Truth be told, I think part of my love of a cook out comes from the knowledge that my husband will help out more if the grill is involved. However, I also love the fun atmosphere that comes with cook outs. Everyone is relaxed and enjoys themselves. The only thing that can cause me any discomfort is the price tag that can come with cooking out.

Seriously, have you seen the prices of steaks lately? If you’re having friends and family over, you certainly can’t afford to feed them all their favorite cuts of beef. For a low-cost cook out, you should learn to stick to these traditional cookout foods.

Hot Dogs – There’s a reason why hot dogs are so incredibly popular. They’re cheap, fun, and easy to grill. In fact, your kids will probably prefer a hot dog to any other meat you might cook up on the grill.

Hamburgers – If you’ve got your heart set on beef, why not go for the much more affordable ground beef? Hamburgers can be easily customized to anyone’s taste by having lots of condiments. Hamburger buns are cheap, too, if you buy them at the local bakery outlet.

Chicken Breasts – For a more upscale feeling for your cookout, you can always opt to grill chicken breasts. If you watch for them on sale at your grocery store, you can pick them up at prices almost as cheap as the hot dogs. Stock up on them when they’re on sale and put them into the freezer for future use. Different sauces and marinades can make it easy to give your chicken a new flavor every time you grill out.

Potato Salad – No cookout is complete without a dish of potato salad. Although potato salad takes a little prep time, you can prepare a bowl of this traditional side dish for less than you would spend of several bags of potato chips.

Fresh Fruit – When the time comes to serve dessert, your guests will be totally refreshed to enjoy pieces of the current season’s fruit. Watermelon slices, grapes, apple chunks, and pineapple pieces are all tasty dessert options than anyone can enjoy.
