Since moms spend so much time in their kitchens, it’s important for them to have a space that they enjoy. Who wants to hang out in a room that’s ugly or depressing? There are so many ways to update a kitchen’s décor that there is really reason to have a kitchen you hate. Now, I’m not talking about ripping out cabinets or putting in new appliances. Instead try small updates like these…
A Good Cleaning – Although cleaning won’t change the color of the walls or the design in the vinyl flooring, cleaning the kitchen is a great place to start your makeover. You’ll see every aspect of the room, up close and personal, and be able to evaluate what changes need to be made. Clearing all of the clutter off your kitchen counters will also go a long way towards improving your kitchen.
Paint – Paint is the cheapest and most powerful decorating tool I’ve ever found. If a room feels dreary, paint it a warm, bright color. If a room’s color makes you want to put sunglasses on when you enter the room, paint it a calm, soothing color. Paint makes everything feel fresh and new.
Drawer Pulls and Handles – Although replacing kitchen cabinets is way too expensive to undertake frugally, you can give your cabinets a whole new look by changing out the hardware on them. Be sure, though, to look for handles that will bolt into the holes that are already in place. Otherwise, you’ll have to worry about filling the old holes and drilling new ones.
Flooring – If your kitchen’s old vinyl floor has seen better days, you can replace it inexpensively and easily using the peel and stick vinyl tiles found at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Old, rough floors should be scraped away. However, if your old floor is just ugly, you can lay the new tiles right on top of the old floor. The only tools you’ll need are an X-acto knife and a ruler or straight edge.
Memo Board – An overabundance of papers fluttering on your refrigerator’s door will not help your kitchen look any better. Instead, hang one of those French memo boards on the wall and slip all of those bits of paper into those. You can even make one yourself with a piece of thin board (1/4 inch or so), batting, decorative fabric, and ribbon.
Display Space – If your kitchen lacks in display space for pretty dishes, you can eke some out of your cabinets. Simply remove the door from one cabinet. Now, you can put your favorite dishes, such as Grandma’s gravy bowl, out for the whole world to see. Remember that the cheapest décor items are the ones that you already own.
