Save Money While Maintaining Your Laminate Floors

March 31st, 2009 · 2 Comments

Laminate floors are popular choices for frugal families for lots of reasons. The price tag associated with laminate floors is much more reasonable than hardwood floors. In addition, keeping laminate floors clean is much easier than trying to clean carpets. Easy installation methods even make it possible for homeowners to install it themselves.

While the cost associated with installing laminate floors is very attractive, the cost that goes along with maintaining those floors is a little less appealing. There are plenty of chemical products available to help you keep your floors spotless. You can even buy those Swiffer systems that combine a dispenser for the cleanser with disposable cleaning pads. Neither of those options, though, is very affordable.

I’ve developed my own method for cleaning the floors that works much better for my household. It’s cost-effective, easy, and less harsh than dousing my floors with chemicals. I did end up buying a dust mop with removable microfiber covers. However, I think I spent $15 on it, but the covers are washable, so I don’t have to keep replacing them.

Many days a quick sweep around the floor with the dust mop is all I need to remove dust and crumbs. I end up with a small pile of debris that I suck up with the vacuum cleaner. On days that I need a little extra cleaning help, though, I can still use my dust mop.

Once I’m done sweeping my floors, I take a clean dust mop cover and soak it in mixture of hot water and vinegar. Then, I wring the cover out so that it doesn’t have any excess water in it. Now I place the damp cover onto my dust mop and make another trip around the room.

That’s all I have to do to keep my floors in tip-top shape. I love that it’s so fast and easy, and that I am not pouring chemicals onto the floors that my kids crawl around on. Now if I could just figure out how to clean our carpeted rooms this easily.

Just tried the water and vinegar solution on my floor. Compared it with the Swiffer, which I tried on the other half of the room. I couldn’t tell a difference between the 2 cleaners, and the vinegar solution was just a few pennies. Good tip.
