Grocery Shopping: 3 Tips You Need to Know to Save Money

If you spend any time at all reading researching ways to be frugal with your money on the internet, you’ve probably already come across tons of tips to help you save money on things like groceries. There are tips that run the gamut from basic reminders to buy generic branded products to unorthodox methods like shopping only in the store’s outer perimeter. Each has its merits, but some work better than others.

The problem is that if your family is anything like my family, we sometimes feel too busy to try out new savings methods. Maybe I just want to know how to get the most for my family’s grocery money and then get on with our lives. If this scenario sounds familiar to you, then this is the article for you. These are my three favorite tips for saving money while grocery shopping:

Use coupons and sales together. Now, this tip isn’t exactly innovative and ground-breaking, but it works. Pairing your coupons and your favorite store’s sales together is one of the best ways to make a big impact on your grocery bills. Pay particular attention to those products on the front page of your grocer’s ads. These are often what they called “loss leaders;” they are really good buys that are intended to get you into the store. Then, look through your coupons and find ways to make those prices even lower.

Avoid frequent trips to the store. If you’re running to the grocery store every day, you’re not planning your grocery shopping. Unplanned shopping doesn’t allow you to take advantage of the sales and coupons that can make your groceries so much cheaper. In addition, it’s really easy to buy convenience foods when you’re in a rush. Try to keep these grocery runs down to a minimum so that you aren’t making hasty choices with your grocery budget.

Go by yourself. I love the kids, but I can’t grocery shop with them. Suddenly little hands are reaching for things and adding them to the cart faster than I can put them back. It’s just not any fun for either of us. Instead, I let my husband keep the kids and shop late at night. The store is less crowded, my husband gets to spend a little one-on-one time with the kids, and I can concentrate on making good choices.

Going alone is a great tip I’ve never read before. It makes perfect sense. Yesterday I went in for a few toiletries (Sunday Coupons) with my fiance, but came out with a pint of ice cream and a 3 Musketeers. As I thought about it, both of us spend more when we’re together at the store.
