A few weeks ago a friend of mine referred me to the popular website TheGroceryGame.com. She’s heard me talk about trying to get the most out of our family’s grocery budget and thought this website would be right up my alley. I hadn’t ever heard of it before, so I’ve spent a little time checking it out.
First, let me fill you in on the basic premise of the site. The Grocery Game asserts that people who choose to use the site and its service will save as much as 60% on their groceries. Users input their zip code into the website and then are able to download a list of all of the grocery items on sale at their local grocery stores each week. In addition, the Grocery Game evaluates just how “on sale” these items are.
Users are entitled to a four-week trial membership for only $1. However, after that trial membership has ended, users are charged $10 every four weeks. For that fee, users are able to access the list that is generated for their favorite grocery store, as well as many printable coupons. Users who would like to be able to see lists for multiple grocery stores can add additional stores to their service for another $5 for each store.
I loved that the Grocery Game seems to embrace a lot of the principle that I’m already using in my grocery shopping. Realizing the savings the Grocery Game promises requires that users utilize the idea of having a pantry stockpile, an idea which I’ve always endorsed. The Grocery Game also helps users cross-reference coupons with sales to help them determine the right time to use their coupons. It’s really a great service.
People who are considering playing the Grocery Game should, however consider one fact: the lists compiled by the Grocery Game aren’t anything that you can’t do for yourself. If you sit down with your local grocery ads and a pad of paper you could quickly create the same listing. And, if you’re tracking prices in a notebook, you can make the same analysis about the prices that you receive in the Grocery’s Game’s lists.
All things considered, I don’t think I’ll be renewing my subscription at the Grocery Game. I’ve been tracking grocery sales for a long time and think I can find a better use for my subscription fee money. However, if you’re new to these saving schemes, I think that the Grocery Game could be very helpful for you. For a relatively low price, you will be guided through the process of evaluating sales and optimizing your coupon usage. In no time at all, your family’s grocery budget will seem larger than ever.

Thanks for sharing. I really find your post about this whole grocery game enlightening.

I appreciate your criticism of The Grocery Game, however I think you are missing one key component that saves people the most money. The Grocery Game will tell you when that price is the cheapest it will be for the season, or when it’s best to only buy it if you need it and not stockpile on that item that week. For that, I think it’s worth every penny!
And I endorse TGG on my own accord, they do not pay me or advertise through any of my sites.

Just to clarify, they charge you $10 for one store every 8 weeks. Every additonal store is an extra $5, every 8 weeks also.

I think the grocery game is a good start. I used it for a year and a half. I got sucked into the whole free/great deal high you get from using it and it made me love shopping. Now, several years later, I can do the same thing on my own. I know my coupons, the grocery cycles and deals and how to shop. It introduced me to coupons and showed me how to use them most effectively though and for that it was worth it!

The Grocery Game also shows you UNADVERTISED sales, which you can’t find in your local grocery ads. I save way more money using The Grocery Game than I would on my own, and i save something even more precious – time!

You can find the same information on other websites and in Blogs for free. I like hotcouponworld.com, there are forums for almost every store you can think of and every week people posts the exact same type of lists that the Grocery Game posts, there are forums for grocery stores as well as drug stores and big box stores like Target and Wal Mart. I tried The Grocery Game, but I like Hot Coupon World better and I save more money by not paying to use that site.

I am researching site such as the grocery game and any other sites that are free and give you basically all of the perts TGG does. Brandi… do you have any other site such as hot coupon world?

TGG sounds like a great thing if you have the time to use it hardcore so as to make the expense worthwhile. Everyone should check out Great Food For All they offer $60-$80 of food for $30. What a deal! you can also order online.
