One of my favorite money-saving tips is to check slickdeals.net, dealnews.com and retailmenot.com when shopping online.

  • 2 Tina // Mar 4, 2009 at 12:55 pm

Spend less- try not to buy things you don’t need. I also check websites and follow the best deals. Also, I always search for a coupon code when i am buying something online

  • 3 Jaimee Wood // Mar 4, 2009 at 12:57 pm

My favorite tip is pretty basic but it’s that you can pair a manufacturer coupon with a store coupon at places like Target & Walgreens. I never knew that for years, and am simply amazed at some of the deals I can get by using both!

  • 4 Deidra // Mar 4, 2009 at 12:57 pm

My favorite money tip is to use cash to pay for purchases like clothes, groceries, and small treats. Not only will you know exactly how much you spent and how much you have in your wallet (so you won’t overspend) – but you can save your coins and 1 dollar bills for those days when you want to give yourself a treat! Thanks for this giveaway and nice blog! I will have a blog like this soon – only gear more so to the single mother :)

I think the tip that has helped me save the most money has been meal-planning. I’m still trying to get the hang of it, but we have saved so much money on take-out and fast food this way!

  • 6 tara wiley // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:03 pm

NO credit cards! The money you can save monthly with out throwing out the window on creit card bills is tremendous! And of course use coupons. And check moneysavingmom.com religiously!

  • 7 Leilani // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:05 pm

My favorite money-saving tip is the various incarnations of the drugstore game. Combining rebates, sales, coupons and Extra Care Bucks, I haven’t had to pay actual cash at Walgreens and CVS for health and beauty items in about 8 months.
    Thanks!

  • 8 rebecca // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:06 pm

My best moneysaving tip is shop CVS!! Use those extracare bucks to get so many things FREE!

  • 9 Lisa // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:09 pm

I try to pair manufacture coupons with store sales (especially buy one get one free deals).

  • 10 January // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:09 pm

If you don’t have cash…..DON’T BUY IT!!!!

  • 11 Anne // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:10 pm

My favorite money saving tip is to stay out of the stores! The less I shop the less I spend.

  • 12 ads // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:11 pm

    USE COUPONS!!!

  • 13 Sheena // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:11 pm

My favorite tip would be research. Always research before buying ANY item. If so, you’ll NEVER pay full price for anything again!

  • 14 Karen H // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:11 pm

My favorite tip woulb be that its not how much you save on an item, but how little you spend overall.

  • 15 Vanessa // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:11 pm

I like to meal plan and perfect meatless meals…

  • 16 Kim // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:13 pm

My favorite money saving tip would be to combine Easy Saver Coupons from Walgreens with manufacturers coupons. I have two huge totes filled with items I got free just in 3 months thanks to doing that.

  • 17 Kara Plank // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:14 pm

We are a military family, and money is very tight right now. I use coupons, and never go to the store without a list to keep me on track!

  • 18 Stephanie // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:16 pm

I just subscribed! My favorite tip is to always use less first and constantly reevaluate what you “need” i.e. use rags instead of paper towels.

  • 19 Lisa // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:19 pm

Line or air dry clothes instead of using the dryer.

  • 20 Kerrie // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:20 pm

My favorite way to save money is menu-planning,you can save so much at the grocery store with just an hour’s worth of planning and lots of coupons to buy what’s on sale.

  • 21 Pam // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:22 pm

We quit buying paper towels last year and use rags instead. Old t-shirts that are not wearable make perfect rags and then into the washer they go!

  • 22 jenny // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:27 pm

Finding something for a great price is awesome, especially if you have a coupon to sweeten the deal. I have found out that just because something is a wonderful deal, I don’t have to buy it! I was buying all sorts of junk “just because it was free, or almost free.” I now stop and think “Do I really need this? Do I know someone who could use this? Is there somewhere I can donate this?” Asking these questions has really helped me stop buying so much “extras.”
We have also planted our own garden, which saves a ton of money. We hand out fresh fruits and veggies to our neighbors and friends.
So, what I am getting at, is thinking simply can save so much money! If you stand back and just enjoy the small things in life, you won’t want to go out and blow money!

  • 23 Jessica Ahrendt // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:27 pm

My favorite money saving tip is to always check for coupons online before making a purchase. I have saved hundreds of dollars by a simple google search!

  • 24 Amanda // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:29 pm

I love to save money and time by planning weekly menus by the sale ads. Another thing is using cash in appointed envelopes. Just by doing those two little things I save lots of money and stay within our budget.

  • 25 roberta // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:32 pm

To use the library! they have tons of dvds and books and many have an online system where you can request your items and just drop by and pick them up. Our library even has story time for toddlers, which we attend each week!

  • 26 Shay Brewer // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:32 pm

My best money saving tip is to find frugal and FREE ways to have family fun. For instance tonight (thankful for nice weather finally) we are taking a picnic to the park. It is within walking distance and I planned a dinner that is easy to pack up and the kids will have fun. This is costing me NOTHING out of pocket. There will always be some way to do something for Free or more cheaply with coupons and still have an outing!

    Thanks for this how amazing!

  • 27 Deanna // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:33 pm

    Buy things on sale!

  • 28 Mariah // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:34 pm

My best advice for saving money is to not buy something right when you want it. Wait and see if in a few days or weeks you still think you really need or you could do without, with something cheaper, or something you already have.

  • 29 Courtnee // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:37 pm

I save money by using less, making menus, making a grocery budget- and like Crystal did at BWH- we got rid oft he papertowels! :)

  • 32 Jamie // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:43 pm

Declare a certain period of time as no-spending XX (day, week, month, whatever). If you stick with this plan, you’ll be amazed what you can do without or how creative you’ll be to get the job done without spending money.

I by Angel Food boxes every month to cut down on grocery bills. There is usually enough meat in each to have meals for my son and I for the entire month and they only cost $30 each.

  • 35 Liz // Mar 4, 2009 at 1:51 pm

Plan your meals around the weekly ads. And if there is a great deal, stock up, freeze, can, whatever. The weekly ads are a great money saver.

  • 39 Connie R. // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:02 pm

My tip is to go to the store prepared. Have a list (matched up with coupons/sales) and stick to that list. When I stray from the list and buy those impulse items I am amazed at how fast my bill goes up.

  • 40 Kim@thecouponhigh // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:07 pm

One of my tips is that at Target you can combine manufacturer coupons with Target coupons. If you forget to print out the target coupons at home(or don’t feel like wasting your ink) you can print them out at the gift registry printers.

  • 41 alyssa // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:08 pm

Wait for sales on items you use regularly. You’ll save alot if you rarely pay full price!

  • 42 Angie // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:09 pm

My newest money-saving tip is in the area of entertainment. With 2 kids, it is costly to go to the movies- we have the price of a ticket, but also a baby-sitter at this point. But, my husband and I love to watch movies. Recently, I have been digging around in the 2 for $10 movies at Wal-mart, and finding one to watch after the kids go to bed. We watch them multiple times and more than get our money’s worth!

  • 43 Maria // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:12 pm

My money-saving tips are to eat at least one meatless meal a week and to google search for coupon codes & free shipping when I shop online. Thanks for a great giveaway!

  • 44 Mrs. J // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:14 pm

My favorite frugal tip is to use coupons and avoid eating out. This has saved us a lot of money especially that we are just a one-income family. Be creative in the kitchen so your family won’t get bored with the food and the temptation to eat out will be lessened.

  • 45 Aleksandra Maguire // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I love Target sales, and i like combining them with coupons. I also need a list when i go to store, so that i don’t wonder around and buy a bunch of unnecessary stuff. I also try to use coupons every time there is buy one get one free. I also like consignments sales for kids and my clothes, and i usually go to 1/2 sale days.

  • 46 Kathryn // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:16 pm

We buy clothes 2nd hand. We only spend money if we have it (no debt!). We cut coupons and shop sales.

CVS!! I have not had to pay for toiletries in over a year! Also, look for meat that is close to expirations, you can usually get a discount. We have a deep freeze and I have not paid full price for meat in months!

  • 64 Crissy // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:49 pm

My favorite money saving idea would be to be organized!

  • 65 JennyOH // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:52 pm

Using cash instead of debit card, and planning grocery shopping around coupons.

  • 66 Cheryl W // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:55 pm

My favorite tip is to buy meat when it is on sale. Buy enough to get you thru the next 3 months. That is usually when it will go on sale again. If you do this for every cut of meat you like, you will save a lot of money over the year.

  • 67 MB // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:55 pm

Pay ourselves first. We get savings automatically deducted and put somewhere else before it hits our checking account so it doesn’t get spent. If we don’t see it, it isn’t there. Also menu planning and know how much our staple items cost at different stores so we don’t spend more than we have to.

  • 68 Sarah // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:57 pm

My favorite money saving tip right now is make your own laundry detergent. It is super easy and will end up saving you lots of money. I’ve been making and using homemade detergent now for almost 8 months. We love it, it works great, and we won’t ever go back to buying it again. Just google homemade laundry detergent and you can find all kinds of good recipes. Thanks!

  • 69 Sarah // Mar 4, 2009 at 2:58 pm

I would have to say my best money saving tip is to just not go shopping. It’s crazy how many things I find that I “need” when I’m out shopping:)

  • 70 Jessica // Mar 4, 2009 at 3:00 pm

My favorite money saving tip is searching for clearanced merchandise – especially at the grocery store. I can often get perishables near their sell-by date for half off, and since these rarely have coupons that is a great deal. Also, nothing can beat a good thrift store for clothing purchases – can’t beat $2 jeans!

  • 71 Kelly // Mar 4, 2009 at 3:03 pm

My favorite money saving tip is to use the public library. I browse the coming soon list at barnes and noble and request the books from the library before they are even out. I often get a brand new unread copy.

My favorite tip for saving money is only pay with available funds. Don’t use credit. It only ends up costing more in the long run.

  • 74 Christy Harrill // Mar 4, 2009 at 3:12 pm

I pay attention to loss leaders. There are certain items on the grocery store sale ad that they aren’t making money on. They’ve placed the price low to draw people in hoping they’ll buy other items. My latest is chicken fryers for $0.67 a lb. We stocked up!

  • 75 Kristi // Mar 4, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Always buy on sale and use coupons. We also use the public library for books and movies.

I don’t know if I have just ONE. It’s probably more of a combination/snowball effect. But if I had to choose just one, it’d be….Make do with what you have or go without.

Then it’s shop second-hand (whether ebay, craigs list, auctions, thrift stores, garage sales).

In this economy, I just buy what we need, and use the coupon mom website to help me find the best grocery deals. I end up with free or almost free stuff every week. I plan meals around what I can get on sale. I’ve cut a lot of things out that just weren’t necessities, like paper towels and dryer sheets, and found that we don’t miss them anyway.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

The biggest way I save money is by meal planning and grocery shopping once a month. It takes a LOT of planning but it is truly worth it.

  • 116 Meghan // Mar 4, 2009 at 4:59 pm

I save money by not taking my husband to the grocery store with me! We used to shop together and he added so many impulse buys that it always racked up the bill.

A big MUST at my house is using a grocery list. It’s amazing how much extra stuff makes it home when we don’t have a list.

  • 119 Zeida // Mar 4, 2009 at 5:11 pm

My fav tip is to simply scan grocery store adds for the best deals and plan your meals accordingly (not the other way around). Thanks!

  • 120 Carrie // Mar 4, 2009 at 5:15 pm

My favorite tip is just simply…don’t buy stuff! Not always possible, but I do shop at home first, and make things whenever I can (like homemade gifts).

One of my favorite money saving tips is to use the coupon books that are sold at our credit union for discounts at local merchants. Most cities have these and there are a lot of BOGO deals. We don’t eat out unless we have one of these coupons!

I am currently on many medications. Even though I have health insurance, the co-pays for my med’s is a killer on cash.
What I do, is look for a pharmacy that offers a gift card for a “new or transferred prescrition. With the gift cards I am able to buy canned items and non-perishables. This really helps ALOT.
Needless, to say I am not popular at many pharmacies, but they understand. Right now Rite-Aid is the most difficult, because they are in Chapter 11, avoid them if possible.

  • 139 melinda // Mar 4, 2009 at 9:03 pm

My favorite tip is play games with your kids. Just simple card games. Saves money on toys that you don’t have to buy, is fun, and your kid will have a lot more fun just being around you and spending time you with. Even if its just for 5 mins and a game of go fish.

  • 140 Jill // Mar 4, 2009 at 9:11 pm

  • 154 Diane // Mar 5, 2009 at 12:56 am

I found a local blog that lists the sales and even tells where the coupons are. Last Saturday I got $95 in groceries for $11.75 – and they overcharged me $1.89 for one product that I will go back and collect. It feels great to go to my pantry to cook instead of going to the store. Stockpiling rocks.

We have started the Dave Ramsey money course and finding it very helpful to get control back of our spending and saving. Going to a all cash, no credit card system for paying for things is one of the biggest savers. It is real if you have to pay for it with cash, there is no emotion tied to a purchase if you just use plastic. Just like others said, buy your needs not the wants.

  • 158 Christine // Mar 5, 2009 at 10:42 am

Use cash and ask for a cash discount. Especially on larger purchases, the retailer/seller will often discount at least the amount they would have had to pay the credit card company for the transaction (3-5%.) Sometimes they’ll discount even more.

Rent movies – don’t go to the movies! These days, dvd’s come out so quickly, that it’s not worth going to the theatre at $10 per adult and $8 per child! For the price of one adult and one child, you can rent a couple of movies, buy a box of microwave popcorn and drinks for a movie night at home for the whole family!

  • 167 Robbin // Mar 5, 2009 at 2:04 pm

My saving tip is remember it’s not how much save but how much you spend. Example if you spend $10 on something that you never would have bought but did because it was 90% off, you didn’t save $90 you spent $10. It’s only a savings if it is something you would have bought anyway.

You can then trade your coupons on craigslist for the brands that you really use. One quaryt of Similac Ready to Feed is $5.82 where I live so if you get a $5 coupon, you get a quart for $.82!!!!

My money saving tip is to match coupons to sales, and to use drugstore giftcard offers for transferring prescriptions. Then use the giftcards to only buy necessities, like TP and cat food. This isn’t a good idea if your prescriptions are changing – you want to have all your drugs at the same place to catch drug interactions, but since my hubby’s been on the same meds for years, it works for us.

When I go shopping I only buy what I went to get, and if I find something I really want, I leave and come back. Usually I talk myself out of it by the time I get back!

The best way I save money is by knowing exactly what I need when I go shopping and then going directly to that item and buying it. I try not to wander around the store.

  • 249 Monique // Mar 7, 2009 at 4:57 pm

My biggest money saving tip is to buy used clothing. I rarely buy clothing for myself that is more than $1 each. I love church garage sales and neighborhood garage sales. I still remember a few summers ago stumbling upon a garage sale that had a whole plastic tub full of clothing my daughter’s upcoming size and it was $0.25 each. I filled a large garbage bag full of her whole wardrobe for the next year for just under $8.

My money saving tip is to buy a box of Bisquik it’s good for pancakes, chicken fingers, bisquits all in one so you don’t have to spend all that money on separate items.

  • 254 Litrease // Mar 7, 2009 at 6:41 pm

Print out coupons before you go shopping for the items your allready going to buy.

My greatest tip is to shop at thrift stores. I rarely buy new clothes for myself or the kids.

  • 256 Michelle // Mar 8, 2009 at 1:43 am

Shop those garage sales! Not only that but hold your own at least once a year to clear out anything you haven’t used in 6 months. I usually take the money I make from my garage sale and use it toward clothing purchases for me and the kids the rest of the year.

One of my favorite money saving tips is to “play the drugstore game”. Purchasing items at CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid along with coupons has saved me lots of money. I’m not an expert yet but I think I’m getting there. I follow a few moneysaving blogs which also helps me. Thank you for the opportunity to win.

Instead of buying your beef/pork from the grocery store, try finding a local farmer to buy it from. You can purchase a quarter, half or a whole beef or hog, store it in your freezer and save hundreds of dollars each year!

  • 270 Maureen Cleary // Mar 8, 2009 at 7:54 pm

One of my favorite money saving tips is to keep shopping garage sales and thrift stores if I am in need of something…..even presents or something specific. In 15 years of garage saling, 99% of the things I’ve needed or wanted were found at much better prices than if I had bought them at a store….all I needed was patience to wait to find them!

  • 271 Joan // Mar 8, 2009 at 8:13 pm

craigslist and freecycle-depending on your area freecycle can be a great place to get quality stuff-I received 4 carseats (for different stages), a jogging stroller, full version of quickbooks, not to mention many many other smaller necessities. And there are always bargains to be found on craigslist.

so I guess my advice is to-go used!

My favorite money-saving tip? Coupons! Recently I bought several packages of tuna at Target. I had $1.00-off coupons, and each tuna packet cost 87 cents. I made a profit of 13 cents on each package. Yay for great Target deals!

Like so many others…I stack coupons, watch for sales carefully, stockpile. I also make sure to carry paper clips — so handy to keep coupons in order. Ones I’m planning to use (especially so small ones don’t get away from me) and to keep ones that are good for particular stores together so I don’t overlook then. I also keep cloth bags near the kids’ car seats so I remember to take them in stores. Finally, I keep a list of what clothing items/sizes I need for everybody and it’s handy when I hit the thrift shops. No more second guessing and overbuying!

Best tips? Most things I do have already been said, but I guess my best tip would be that just because something is on sale, if you don’t need it…you aren’t saving money (unless you are stocking up on something you will use in the future). That was a hard thing to learn myself. Now I don’t shop for sport, and only shop for necessities.

I love saving money and always use manufacturer coupons and restaurant coupons and love using the passbook. My biggest savings from my Passbook this year will be used on the Buffet at the Diamond Club at the TX Rangers Stadium in Arlington, TX. That will be a great savings and the food is great!!!!!

  • 306 Chris // Mar 10, 2009 at 2:43 pm

My favorite money saving tip is to shop consignment and thrift stores. Many times you can find great clothing at very low prices. My husband, who works with clay sculpture and tends to ruin his clohtes, gets almost all of his clothing from the local thrift store. It saves us bnches of money each year. I have a harder time finding things at the thrift store, but a few local consignment stores have been great places to supplement my work wardrobe.

  • 307 Macey // Mar 10, 2009 at 4:17 pm

I like to go to the store with a list (after looking for deals) and try REALLY hard not to stray-it has saved me money!

  • 308 Tracy // Mar 10, 2009 at 4:26 pm

My favorite money saving tip is to pay yourself first. If I had listened to that advice when I first heard it I would have much more money saved.

I watch the grocery ads and stock up on what is on sale and use coupons whenever possible.
