Frugal Weight Loss Tips

January 10th, 2009 · 5 Comments

Losing weight is a major concern for many people. If I asked my friends and family members, I would guess that at least half of them would say that they wished they could drop a few pounds. The big question, though, is how to lose that weight.

Should you join a weight loss program like Weight Watchers? Maybe a program that includes purchasing prepackaged food is the answer for you. Or, most extreme on the list of weight loss methods, some people may even turn to surgery to facilitate weight loss. The only problem is that each of these methods requires a major cash outlay. Ugh! How do you lose weight and still keep your budget intact?

The first key to losing weight and saving money at the same time is to cut down on the number of meals you eat away from your home. Restaurants are expensive, and it’s hard to make nutritious food choices in restaurants. Eating out can be a double negative in that regard. Instead of dining out, plan to make as many of your meals as you can.

Now that you’re eating at home, however, there is still another peril to be avoided: convenience foods. Sure, those Lean Cuisine meals are easy to make, but are they really cost-effective? If you’ve mastered a few basic kitchen skills, you can make much better meals for a lot less money. Check out a few cookbooks that are centered on low-calories, but nutritious, meals for inspiration. (Make sure, though, you get your cookbooks at the library so that they don’t cost you anything.) Or, if you’re in a pinch for a new recipe, you can always find one with a quick Google search.

Finally, one way to lose weight that doesn’t cost anything is to increase your physical activity. Look for ways to add activity into your day while you go about your regular activities. You can take the kids to the park, park a little farther away at your local shopping center, or even take on some vigorous housework. Any extra energy you can burn can only help you on your path to weight loss.
