Getting my home dressed up for the holidays is one of my favorite parts of the Christmas season. I love to see all of the sparkle and shine of the decorations as I pull out the decorations that have spent the past year packed away. It’s like seeing old friends again.
If you don’t, however, already have a collection of ornaments and holiday décor items waiting to be put to use in your home, you may feel like you can’t afford to really give your house the glamour treatment. Don’t worry, though. There are tons of ways to dress your home up for the holidays while watching your pennies.
Use what you have
The first rule of frugal decorating is to put the pretty things you already have to use. Maybe you have a clear glass bowl that you received as a wedding gift hiding in your cabinets. Add a few pretty Christmas ornaments to the bowl and you have a glittering centerpiece. Likewise, remove the little covers from your dining room’s chandelier and add tiny ribbons (you can use scraps from your gift-wrapping) to give them a playful, but elegant touch. Look around your home for ways to turn your ordinary décor items into glamorous Christmas decorations.
Focus on a color
To make up for a lack of decorating dollars, you should try to make a large statement with your holiday decorating. Choose one color and try to repeat it throughout your decorations. (If you can’t stand to be restricted to one color, try using one color for each room.) If you decided to use silver and blue, use blue ribbon and inexpensive blue and silver ornaments to adorn your room. For a more traditional theme, use red and green.
Candlelight adds elegance to everything
For a low-cost way to dress up almost any space, try adding candlelight. You can use candles in colors that match your home’s décor, but plain, white candles work just as nicely. The candlelight will make everything in your seem magical. Just be sure to keep them away from flammable objects.
Clear the clutter
The cheapest way you’ll ever find to dress up your home for the holidays is to pack away the clutter of everyday life. By clearing your home of unnecessary stuff, you’ll allow your holiday décor to really sparkle.
