Sandwiches make up a strong part of many frugal diets. When weather is warm, sandwiches are an easy way to make dinner without firing up the stove. When colder weather strikes, a sturdy sandwich is a wonderful comfort during lunches. Who wants to leave work to brave the brisk cold of winter? At any time of year, being able to build a frugal, but tasty, sandwich is a must.
Lunchmeat – Lunchmeat sandwiches are a classic example of a great sandwich that isn’t expensive to make. Bologna, ham, turkey are all options in this simple fare. Dress it with your family’s favorite tastes, such as mayonnaise or mustard, and your sandwich is ready.
Egg Salad – Egg salad sandwiches are perfect when you have time to make the filling for your sandwiches ahead of time. Although it takes a little time to boil and peel the eggs, the extra effort is well worth it. Cube the eggs, combine with mustard, and salt. Sweet pickle juice is a nice addition as well.
Chicken Salad – Slightly more robust than the egg salad sandwich, a chicken salad sandwich is made much the same way. Using up leftover chicken is a great way to save some money, but you could also purchase canned chicken meat when it’s on sale. I’ve found that the store brand Target sells is quite good – and a lot less expensive than the “name” brand canned chicken. If you want to give your sandwich a more gourmet flair, try adding grapes to your chicken salad.
Grilled Cheese – Few sandwiches ward off the winter doldrums like a steaming grilled cheese sandwich. To add a little variety you can experiment with different cheeses. The creamiest grilled cheese I’ve ever had, however, was made with Velveeta.
BLT – BLT’s are quick and easy to prepare, but still very satisfying. Cool lettuce and tomato slices combine with warm bacon to provide a tried and true lunch alternative. Don’t forget to toast your bread to make your sandwich cut easier. Health-conscious families may choose to use turkey bacon, rather than pork.
