Three Things to Ask Before You Hire a Pest Control Company for Your Home

25. August 2008, 6:13 UhrGeneral FinanceDana Joseph

Imagine that you are cleaning your kitchen counters one day and you notice one lowly ant making his way across your counter. You probably wipe him away and don’t think much more of it. But the next day, you see two or three of his little friends. You wipe those away and develop a “wait and see” attitude. But within a few more days, you start seeing more and more of these little critters and quickly realize that you’re going to need some help getting rid of your uninvited houseguests. You’re going to have to call an exterminator.

Hiring an exterminator or a pest control company to rid your home of unwelcome guests can be a little overwhelming for some homeowners. Often, you don’t think about needing a pest control specialist until your home is overrun with some type of critter, and you just want to find someone to quickly handle the problem. Who has time to do research on pest control companies when your house is being invaded by some less than savory creatures?

You can quickly get a handle on the type of pest control company you are dealing with by asking a few simple questions. Based upon the representative’s answer to these questions you can decide if this company is suitable to work in your home or if you need to continue on in your speedy hunt for an exterminator.

How long has the company been in existence? Are they licensed or accredited? You don’t want to trust your home to some fly-by-night pest control company that hasn’t worked all of the kinks out of their business yet. Try to find a company that has worked in your area for at least a few years. They’ll be more likely to be there if you need them again and to be familiar with the types of pests that are rampant in your area.

How does the exterminator plan to treat the problem in your home? Since the pest control specialist will probably be using chemicals in your home, you have every right to know and to understand what he will be doing in your home. Ask to see the work order or contract, including prices, and make sure you understand everything on it.

Is the pest control company’s work guaranteed? How long does the guarantee last? If you have a reoccurrence of the same type of infestation, you’ll want to know that the company will stand behind their expert’s work. Make sure that the details of the guarantee are noted on your contract.

By asking a few specific questions before the pest control company starts working in your home, you can be certain to get the service you expect at a price you have agreed to. Soon, you’ll have your home back and be able to forget all about those uninvited guests.

If they are just common-or-garden ants, you might like to like try the following tricks before calling the exterminator in:

Although they will not give you a straight answer, trying to find out if the company will harass you for months following an initial inspection would have been helpful. it has been a year, and I still get calls from one place. Leave me alone!

We chose our pest control company based on reputation with neighbors and that they have great customer service. I also like that they will come out within 24 hours if you have any critters running around the house, garage, or roof. They have raised rates recently and am considering changing our plan with them. It’s $32 a month and I need to see what other options are available, including doing it myself.
