Things that are for the longer run like furniture, electronics, etc I do prefer to spend a bit more so that i do save the money that will go for reparing the cheap ones. A simple example that I've talked about before on my blog is shoes. You could buy cheap shoes from Walmart, but you're going to have to replace them a lot sooner than you would a pair of better-quality shoes. Also, the cheap shoes sometimes hurt. The best way, I think, is to get the nicer quality stuff on sale or used. That way, you're being frugal, but also still getting something of quality that will last. I completely agree with you. I wish that I had made a lot of my purchases allowing for the fact that I was planning a family. We now have very dirty looking pale coloured furniture and cheap bookcases that are falling apart.
