Dress Your Little One for Less

2. March 2008, 8:44 UhrSaving MoneyDana Joseph

It seems like yesterday that you brought your little one home from the hospital, doesn’t it? She was probably in a jumper so tiny that it could easily be confused with the ones her dolls wear now. Could you ever have imagined how fast she’d grow?

Since your little one won’t stay little forever, she will need new clothes often. Although you want her to look cute, you don’t want to invest too much in these clothes that she’ll wear for so little time. Fortunately the bargain-hunting parent has a lot of options for finding great children’s clothes at a discounted price.

Consignment stores are a budget-oriented parent’s best friend when it comes to finding great clothing for an even better price. These types of stores offer gently-used clothes for children and babies. In addition, customers at these stores can sometimes sell their own used clothing to the store for store credit or cash.

EBay is another source for discounted clothing for children and babies of all ages. And on eBay you may even find great deals on brand new clothing. Some eBay vendors feature clothes that are purchased in bulk and then sold at a bargain price. EBay shoppers should remember one word of caution: look closely at the auction descriptions. Since you can’t physically touch and inspect your purchases, you’ll want to make sure you know exactly what you’re purchasing.

Shopping at garage sales is rather like shopping on eBay in person. Now you can hold the clothes and look them over. And you don’t have to pay for shipping of your purchases. Check out garage sales in your neighborhood to stock up on play clothes for your little one.

Clearance sales at department stores are another great way to find the more important clothing items for your children. Try shopping a year in advance for seasonal items like coats or swimsuits. You’ll be able to buy them at a discount and put them away for future use.

When you go shopping for clothes for you kids, try to make it an adventure. If the kids are old enough, get them involved and challenge them to find a great buy while you’re shopping. You’ll teach them an important lesson about shopping and save money at the same time.
