Dining Out On A Dime

February 29th, 2008 Comments(0)

Dining at restaurants can really take up a large chunk of your budget. In fact, the cost of a dinner for two at a nice restaurant can be so expensive that you might think that being fiscally responsible requires that you give up eating out altogether. How else can you stay within the boundaries of your budget? Fortunately, there are a few ways to keep the costs of dining out of the house under control.

Check out your local “Entertainment Book”. There are a lot of coupons for restaurants in your area to lower the costs of restaurant dining in the “Entertainment Book”. These coupons can grant the diners things such as free appetizers or even a free second entrée, perfect for couples. Look for your area’s “Entertainment Book” in grocery stores, in school fundraisers, or online.

Consider eating lunch instead of dinner. Lunch menus often feature discounted pricing. As a bonus, since lunch portions are usually a little smaller than dinner portions, you won’t be tempted to over-eat at these meals.

Be sure to look for the specials listing at the restaurant. When new menu items are introduced they are often given a lower introductory price. Restaurants who receive a good price on something from their suppliers they often pass that savings on to their customers by featuring a related menu item. Look for these specials on message boards in the restaurant lobby, on tabletop displays, or on the front of the menus.

Skip the alcohol drinks. Restaurants charge notoriously high prices for alcoholic drinks. If you’re willing to forego these beverages in favor of soft drinks or water, you will see significant savings on your restaurant tab.

Eating at restaurants doesn’t have to be the budget breaking expense that you imagine it to be. By taking advantage of the available discounts and specials at restaurants you can enjoy the occasional restaurant outing and still manage to stay on top of your financial goals. Experienced in moderation, the occasional dining treat can even help you feel encouraged to stay on your budget. So, be on the lookout for specials and enjoy your favorite dining spot guilt-free.

Usher Spring into Your Home Decorating

February 27th, 2008 Comments(0)

When spring approaches, you might make a few changes in your closet. Your long-sleeved sweaters are banished to the back of the closet while more lightweight shirts make their way to the front of the closet. Your chunky winter boots are replaced by fun sandals.

Why should the rest of your home miss out on all of the fun? Like your closet, your home décor may be screaming for a spring update. Consider trying these methods to incorporate the change of seasons into your house.

Incorporate plants into your home. Nothing exemplifies spring like live, growing plants. For a few dollars, you can purchase seeds and start growing your own decorations. Plant your seeds in inexpensive pots available at your local dollar store or thrift store.

Swap heavy drapes for lighter, sheer window dressings. You can take advantage of the increased daylight hours by letting more light into your own home. And imagine how pretty these lightweight curtains will look floating in the breeze when you open your windows to enjoy the temperate weather.

Change up the colors in your living room. During winter months, it’s only natural to want to be surrounded by warm colors and fabrics to help combat the chill of the season. Now that spring is eminent, you can replace your accessories like pillows or candles with colors more appropriate for spring. To save money on this project, you could consider covering your winter pillows with slipcovers. Then next fall, you can simply remove the slipcovers.

Add a wreath to your front door. Sure, you probably had one up for the holiday, but this time try to find a wreath with spring flowers on them, such as lilacs or apple blossoms. If you watch the craft store ads, you can probably pick one of these wreaths up relatively cheaply.

Rotate the artwork in your home. As you change the colors of your décor to fit the new season, the art on your walls may need to be changed, as well. You can purchase art prints and pop them into your existing frames to complete your spring decorating.

Bringing the colors and feeling of spring into your home décor doesn’t have to be an overpowering change. By simply changing a few things you can keep your home feeling fresh without spending a lot of money.

Bargain Hunting - Find A Great Price

February 25th, 2008 Comments(0)

Bargain hunters will find that February is the perfect time to satisfy their quest for a good buy on several different types of merchandise. New, incoming products and older, discontinued products serve to motivate stores to offer prices that make even large ticket items more affordable. The key to finding these bargains is looking at off-season merchandise.

Grills – Grill sales are prevalent throughout the summer months as people enjoy family dining outdoors. By February, however, the demand for outdoor cooking equipment is pretty low. Expect to find these items at extremely discounted prices at your local retailer.

Boats – Like cars, new models of boats are released according to the calendar year. Unlike cars, however, boats do not enjoy year-round demand from their customers. With many harbors frozen during February’s cold temperatures, boat prices are usually lowest throughout the winter months.

Winter Clothing & Accessories – As consumers’ minds start to turn from cold, winter weather to thoughts of a much warmer spring day, retailers’ sales floors begin to reflect the move to spring products. Heavy outerwear displays convert to brightly colored swimsuit displays. Stocking hats designed to keep your ears and head warm give way to sunglasses and floppy hats. Faced with the need to get their winter stock out of their stores, retailers offer huge discounts during February on any of their remaining winter apparel.

Furniture – Many manufacturers release new models of furniture after the first of the year. You will find that furniture centers are often willing to offer deep price cuts on the old models to make room for incoming furniture shipments.

Appliances – Like furniture, appliance manufacturers release new models of their equipment during the winter months. Be sure to watch the appliance centers at retailers such as Home Depot, Lowe’s, or Best Buy for those tell-tale yellow clearance tags.

Patient shoppers will find that February is the best month to make many of their large purchases. Perhaps you’ve been dreaming about family barbecues or enjoying a movie on a cushier couch only to be discouraged by the high price tag associated with your dream. Try checking back in with your local stores to see how last year’s items are priced now. If you’ve been lusting for that stainless steel grill or comfy sofa, you may just find that the price has been dropped to something within your price range.
