I am fortunate that I learned to sew at a very young age. My Mom was a great seamstress and she made all of our clothes when we were growing up. Some of it was out of necessity – we were a big family. But Mom really did enjoy sewing and was very good at it. She taught me how to sew when I was 10 years old. It has been a very enjoyable hobby and one that has saved me a lot of money.
Over the years I’ve sewn my own window curtains, drapes, slipcovers, pillows, and even made my first child’s entire nursery bedding set. Many of the Christmas gifts I give are items that I have sewn. I can easily alter the children’s clothing to fix rips, tears, and to adjust hem lengths. Currently I am sewing costumes for them and am working on several sewing projects for Christmas including making American Girl doll clothes. (I had forgotten how much fun it is to make your own doll clothes!) I can’t imagine not having this skill and having to hire a seamstress for all our sewing needs.
If you don’t know how to sew and want to learn, check out your local arts and crafts store to take a sewing class or two. Some community colleges also offer beginning sweing classes. Start with easy projects and work your way up. In no time at all you’ll be whipping up some of your own projects!
