Saving 50% or More On Groceries

August 3rd, 2007 · 1 Comment

I recently wrote a review of “The Greatest Secrets Of The Coupon Mom“, a book which details ways to save money on groceries. One of the best techniques I learned was how to maximize my savings on groceries by combining coupons with store sales. Now I have used this method in the past but not nearly as much as I could have. Basically you want to identify what foods you regularly purchase and then stockpile those items when they go on sale.

For example, my local Publix had a sale this past week on the Quaker Oats granola bars. We go through a lot of those in our house. They were on sale for Buy One Get One Free. I recently started buying multiple copies of the Sunday newspaper so I could get the coupon inserts and have many coupons for the same item instead of just one coupon. As a result of my coupon stockpiling, I had a stack of coupons for the Quaker Oats granola bars, the very same item that was on sale. The coupon was 55 cents off when you purchase 2 boxes. My Publix allowed me to use this coupon for each box I purchased. Here are how the numbers came out:

Quaker Oats Granola Bars = $2.79 x 6 boxes purchased = $16.74.
(Received 6 boxes free with purchase)
Coupon value = 6 coupons at 55 cents each = $3.30

Quaker Oats Granola Bars 12 boxes final cost = $13.44
Cost per box after sale and coupons = $1.12
Percent savings = 59%

You can see from the above example that you could save 50% or more on your grocery purchases by combining coupons with sale ads, and stockpiling the items you use when you can get them on sale.
