I’ve noticed that some “back to school” sales have started. While the big sales have yet to begin, I have seen a few items that are priced very low right now. For example, this week Office Depot is advertising a 24-pack of crayola crayons for 9 cents. This is an advertising incentive to get you into the store to purchase the crayons with the hope that you will purchase your other school supplies there too (which are not on sale). Of course, I stopped in and bought several packs of the crayons but nothing else; I will be waiting for the other sales on the items I need to buy. Here are several ways that I stretch our dollars when shopping for back to school supplies:
1. Shop different stores to get the best prices. Just like Office Depot’s current sale, other stores will be featuring different products to lure you into their stores. I plan to take advantage of the best offer at each store.
2. Check the sale ads. For the next few weekends all the store ads are going to be focusing on “back to school”. I will be carefully reading and comparing these ads to map out my shopping strategy and maxmize savings.
3. Stock up when you find a rock bottom price. When I find an item at a rock bottom price (like the 9 cent crayons) I will stock up on them. I am not likely to find these items at such cheap prices again for another year so I like to have extras on hand. I only do this for items that I know we will use. Crayons are a “staple” here in our home.
4. Try to combine sales with other incentives like tax free sales days or coupons. The state of Florida has a tax free holiday week during which time there are many back to school sales. By combining these sales and looking for appropriate coupons, I can really increase the savings.
