Do You Multi-Task?

July 6th, 2007 · 1 Comment

I am a big multi-tasker. I didn’t always used to be that way but over the years (and with the birth of each child), my responsibilities increased while the amount of time I had did not. The only answer was to combine tasks when possible, and learn to squeeze out every available minute from the clock. I’m not an efficiency expert, but I have learned that certain activities can be done simultaneously. Here are some multi-tasking methods that have worked in our household:

TV time is combined with another chore. Folding laundry, ironing, and sewing repairs come to mind. I’ve also been known to dust or vacuum the living room during commercial time!

Preparing two meals at once. During dinner time, two meals are prepared. One meal is eaten for the current dinner while another is placed in the fridge for the next night or frozen for use at a later time. It is so nice to have a stockpile of frozen meals in the freezer ready to go.

Cleaning up while I am cooking. Before I start preparing a meal I make sure the sink and dishwasher are cleaned out. Then as I am finished using a bowl or spoon, I place them immediately into the dishwasher, in effect cleaning up as I go.

Delegating tasks to the kids. This one is a little tricky because you need to give a chore that they can actually do and not require you to re-do! We delegate setting the table, clearing off the dirty dishes after the meal, and sweeping the floor although the oldest child has now “graduated” to laundry duty.

So, do you multi-task? I would love to hear your strategies for multi-tasking.

I don’t think I could survive without multitasking. I talk on the phone while I fold laundry. I prep tomorrow’s breakfast and lunch while making dinner, and do the dishes too. I disinfect the kids’ toys with a Medela wipe while clearing them off the floor before vacuuming. But one time I try not to multitask is when I’m sitting in the living room with the kids – I can’t leave b/c they’re too young to be trusted for long, and I really have to fight the urge to pick up a magazine or a book and to instead get down on the floor and play with them (even if I’m competing with the tv).
