Book Review: Shattering The Two-Income Myth

June 6th, 2007 · No Comments

This is a book I borrowed from the library last month and is subtitled “Daily Secrets For Living Well on One Income” and was written by Andy Dappen.

The book is written through a series of daily tips which provide many money saving ideas. I liked the ideas that we presented. Although none were really new to me, the one tip per day method was a refreshing way to consider some of the topics. I particularly enjoyed the author’s focus on multi-tasking which is something I work on quite a bit. He advocates always doing something else while watching t.v. (for example exercising, clipping coupons, mending clothes, creating your own snack bags from the larger bags of chips, etc.) Multi-tasking has saved our family money because by maximizing my use of time, I can get more things done which means I don’t have to pay someone else to do something. For example, by preparing two meals at dinner time and freezing one of them, I can prevent the “what’s for dinner” syndrome and the ordering out of a pizza last minute because I don’t know what to serve for dinner.

Other tips from the book that I enjoyed are the frugal homemade cleaning recipes, decluttering techniques, and methods for organizing your freezer stockpiles. Overall, I think this is a good read if you are interested in living on one income as the book provides some very valuable tips on how to achieve that goal.
