With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, I’ve seen all kinds of advertisements for gifts and flowers for Mom. Some of these range from items that are moderately priced to more expensive gifts like jewelry and electronics! I’ve been thinking lately about what was the greatest Mother’s Day gift that I’d ever given my own Mom. Oh sure, I gave my share of fresh flowers or beautiful gifts, some costing more than others, but nothing can compare to the time I spent with her. As I have grown older, I have seen that material things just don’t have the longevity that a wonderful memory does, and by spending time with someone you are giving them the message that you care.
Sadly, my Mother passed away quite a few years ago so Mother’s Day is always bittersweet. I have wonderful memories of her and the times we spent together and I still miss her so much. When I was growing up, our family didn’t have much money so we always made gifts for each other for any holiday. One of my favorite memories of Mother’s Day was the year that my sister and I made Mom a wonderful apron. We used scraps of gingham fabric in different pastel colors like yellow, pink, blue, and green and developed a sort of quilt design. No pattern was used! Then we sewed on small white rick rack for edging. We were so pleased with the result and my Mom treasured that apron. The important thing was that we let Mom know we cared and we took the time to make something extra special for her. I’m sure it wasn’t sewn the best but we did our best for her, and that is what mattered.
So this Mother’s Day spend a little bit of time with your Mom. Maybe you can take her out to brunch or share a cup of tea but remember, it is the time you spend together that you will remember the most, and so will she.
