I’ve run the Quicken reports for last month, and came up with the total spent on groceries: $534.38. My budget goal was $500 so I was just slightly over that amount. I am going to work harder this month to get this number at $500. Here are some of the methods I’ve been using that seem to be working well.
1. Aggressively comparing prices between stores. There is a large disparity from one store to another and I’ve switched from trying to purchase everything at one store and in one stop. I now have to visit about 3 or 4 different stores, but I am trying to work out a schedule so I don’t have to make all those trips during the weekend. Another part of this strategy includes compiling a price worksheet, so I can quickly see which store has the lowest price on an item.
2. Getting the grocery store ads on Wednesdays and making my menu based on the sale items. Every week it seems that at least one of the local grocery stores is having a Buy 1 Get 1 Free sale on something I use. I check these sales out first.Â
3. Clipping coupons. I do not use this strategy on its own though; I get more mileage when combining sale prices and coupons.Â
4. Using up leftovers more efficiently. I am constantly checking the refrigerator now to keep up with what needs to be eaten before it goes bad.
5. Keeping a running daily total of the grocery expenses. Just keeping myself aware of what the total is for the month has kept my spending to a minimum. It’s a great way to stay on track when you are reminded of what you’ve spent so far and what you have left to spend.Â
