We are having a birthday party this week for one of our children. No, we are not throwing a big bash, but are having a party for just family. We celebrate our children’s birthdays in grand fashion, but we do not spend a lot of money. Here are some money saving tips that we use:
1. I do all the cooking myself. I usually just put together regular meals that the entire family likes such as hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill, potato chips, fresh fruit orsalad. These are items that I can put together quickly and easily. I like to have time to enjoy the party too!
2. I bake their birthday cake the day before the party.   I decorate the cake to whatever theme the birthday child has requested.
3. I buy the tablecloths, napkins, and other party ware from the dollar store except for a couple of items that I purchase from the local party store. We let the birthday child pick out what theme they want for their party and then purchase a tablecover or plates in that theme. I then get other party accessories in compatible colors from the dollar store. For example, if the child chooses a “Nascar” theme, I would purchase the Nascar tablecloth from a party store, and then pick out plain red plates, red streamers, etc. from the dollar store. I would decorate the cake using red and black icing and maybe draw a little “raceway” on top of the cake. This way the party has the theme without spending the theme prices.
If you are throwing a larger party, the dollar store or even the Target Dollar Spot is a great place to pick up party favors inexpensively. You could even use plain white lunch bags, decorate them festively with markers, and then put the party favors in there! Planning in advance is the key to saving money on a birthday party.Â
