I was reading over at Free Money Finance about a list of 10 times you can’t afford to skimp.   I thoroughly agree on the importance of hiring a home inspector, which can potentially save you a lot of money down the road if problems are identified. But one thing that many homeowners may not consider is hiring a home inspector while you are having your house built. You need someone on your side (independently) to monitor the construction of your home. We learned our lesson the hard way. We relied on our building contractor to “supervise” the progress of our home. At closing time there were lots of “little things” that while they passed an inspection, they were not cosmetically up to our standards. For example, the drywall is uneven in places, as is the flooring. The house was not insulated enough either. If we had hired our own home inspector to monitor the building of our home, these items would have been fixed as they occured. Afterwards, they are much more costly and more difficult to repair.Â
