We Don’t Have Debt

in Debt, Personal Finance

In reading some of the other personal finance blogs, I realized that our situation is a bit different because we’re not blogging about “getting out of debt”.  We don’t have credit card debt, car bills, or student loans.  There is nothing to “get out of” because we never accumulated debt.  We began our married life together debt free, and have maintained that for 13+ years now, and no we are not “made of money”.  We made a commitment to stay out of debt and live on a cash only basis, so we have had to make sacrifices to make it happen.

I am not going to say it has always been easy.  Sure, we’ve been tempted to want some of the newest gizmos, gadgets, cars, etc. but we disciplined ourselves that if we really wanted something badly we would need to save up for it and shop around for the best price.  (That’s why I post on sale prices so much)  We are teaching those same principles to our children; how to save up for what you want.  Sometimes, after saving up for an item we wanted, we would discover that we didn’t really want it after all.

Having an emergency fund has been an important part of our financial plan.  Sure, we’ve had times the car has broken down, repairs necessitated by the hurricanes (yes all 3 of them), as well as unforeseen medical expenses, etc.   Having that emergency fund set up and fully funded allowed us to weather these financial bumps.

We are very thankful (Thank you God) for allowing us to have the knowledge that allows us to plan our financial lives in such a peaceful manner.   We are big fans of Larry Burkett (may he rest in peace) who was an advocate for debt-free living, and wrote many easy-to-read books, training programs, and manuals on personal financial management.  He used to run the Christian Financial Concepts ministry which was later merged with Crown Financial Ministries.

Getting and staying out of debt does seem to be a topic of a lot of blogs. Maybe that’s why there are some many businesses (e.g 0% credit cards, debt consolidation, mortgage refinancing) that direct advertising towards this group:-)

Congratulations on being in the debt free group. It gives you the opportunity to focus on building your wealth for the future.
