I learned the other day that our dental insurance only covers 2 exams for the kids per year. Of course, I learned this after we had made our 3rd visit and received a bill. It was my own fault, of course, because I should have made a note on the calendar that we’d gone early last year when we suspected that one of the kids had a cavity. She did not have a cavity, but it counted as one of the visits for an exam. Now, another mistake I made was not getting an itemized receipt for work done at the end of the visit.  Our dental office files the insurance for us so they make it “easy”. However, we’ve learned from experience that it is important to get a receipt that same day, with an itemized listing of what will be billed to the insurance company. First, we can verify that those things really were done and second, we know what is an outstanding bill on our part. Well, from now on I will make sure to get the itemized bill even with the kids running around the waiting room. Maybe it will just get the office staff to give me my bill a little quicker!
