Check Those Per Unit Prices At The Grocery Store – You Might Be Surprised

I was reading Don’t Make This Shopping Mistake at the Grocery Store at DebtFree in reference to the importance of calculating unit prices.

We’ve noticed these price differences at the large discount warehouse stores like Costco and Sam’s Club.  Traditional thinking is that buying an item in bulk will be the cheapest, as unit prices will be the lowest.  What we’ve found, though, is that many times the price per unit will initially be lower when they first stock an item, and then creep up slowly over time, until it is no longer cheaper to buy the larger quantity.  It is beneficial to keep a price notebook where you can note the price per unit for the items you routinely buy and then you have a comparison point.  It takes a little more time to continually monitor your price per unit per grocery item, but taken in the overall you can save substantial amounts on your grocery bill by regularly policing these prices.  I think of it as being a “calculator detective” which makes the task a little more enjoyable.
