Open Enrollment Time :: Trying To Read All The Small Print

It’s that time of year with my husband’s employer…when the medical benefits package comes in the mail and we have to decide which medical benefit option we will pick.  Now, of course, we are very fortunate to have health insurance through his employer.  However, every year our costs are going up, both the amount we pay to get the insurance, our deductibles increase, our copays have increased, while our list of doctors and services continues to get narrowed down.  You practically need a college degree to figure it out all (wait, we have that), and of course a magnifying glass to read all the asterisks and fine print at the bottom.  But, the brochure is so glossy and pretty and the graphs are impressive…until you try to make sense of all the mumbo jumbo and figure the bottom line.  Our impression?  Management goes to the accounting department and says “where can we cut expenses?”  Then that data is fed to the marketing department who is told to “make them think they are getting something great” and “hide all the details in the small print.”
