We are focusing this week on ways to save money on your household expenses. Yesterday, I posted about using window tinting and how that can greatly reduce your home energy costs. Well on the same theme, using a ceiling fan can definitely help save money on your home’s energy expenses. Many of these ceiling fans are decorative too, so you can save money and make your room look better!
I was looking at Lowe’s sales ad for this week and they have quite a few of the Harbor Breeze ceiling fans on sale. Harbor Breeze is Lowe’s brand of ceiling fan. Lowe’s is a local do-it-yourself home improvement store. We’ve saved lots of money on stuff for our home by learning “how to do it ourselves”.
The 52″ Bellhaven Ceiling fan comes in a bronze or nickel finish. It has 5 reversible cherry blades and comes with a 4 light alabaster glass kit. The sale price is $119. Another Harbor Breeze model on sale is the 42″ Princess Euro ceiling fan with an antique nickel and chrome finish. A light kit is included and the advertised sale price is $59. The most inexpensive Harbor Breeze fan advertised is the 42″ Ocracoke Dual Mount ceiling fan for $39.97. As always, shop around and compare prices and options (light kit included or not) when purchasing a ceiling fan.

I just wasted an afternoon on a Harbor Breeze (52″ Triton) fan installation, which was on sale at Lowe’s. Initially, I was put off when I realized the fan took non-standard “candelabra” bulbs and that it worked off one switch instead of two. (I wanted to be able to control it from the wall with the switches and I would have preferred a pull-chain speed control for the fan.) I let that slide, consigning myself to use the remote. Unfortunately, the remote did not do what I wanted it to. The dimmer on the light only works intermittently. I also felt the instructions were small and hard to read. I guess you really do get what you pay for!

I bought a Harbor Breeze fan at Lowe’s, and broke the attached light globe. I can’t find another big enough-same style. Lowe’s doesn’t stock any, and I have had comments like “Those aren’t made any more” etc. I just installed it in May. Fun.

Unfortunately we bought one of these fans. We asked the lighting guy if the bar that it was hanging from in the store was an optional portion of the installation and if the top of the decorative glass covering the motor would flush mount to our ceiling. He said that the bar was for store display only. Not only was the bar not for display only it also came with a big decorative cap at the top. We have fairly high ceilings but if we had turned this fan on while installed in our living room it would have come to approximately eye level with my husband. When we took the fan back it took over half an hour and several assists from the manager and a bit of arguing to get our money back. Since this is the second time that we have been burned after buying a high ticket item from Lowe’s, (this was a special order stained glass model costing $300) we have decided that they will no longer get any of our business for anything beyond paint etc. it’s just not worth the hassle, the lack of any kind of knowledge on the part of the sales staff and the fact that you may not be able to get your money back. Any money spent on an item that won’t work for your house or works poorly, is too much money.

unfortunately, Lowe’s sells a lot of refurbished things as new; found that out and was very angry. BBB doesn’t do a thing for you so I have gone further.
I have a harbor breeze and it doesn’t give any air flow at all. Standing under it you would think there would be some feeling of air ? Well, there isn’t. They are no help in Lowe’s at all, simply because they know nothing and couldn’t care less, if they tried, to care.
I own five celing fans and they all are cooling their respective rooms, this room with the harbor breeze is only 10X12 and normal ceiling heights…all my rooms have same ceiling height…8 feet…in fact, my bedroom fan from Sears has been working for many years…the Harbor Breeze is relatively new…and even on the up feature…to the ceiling, it is cooler in that room than the harbor breeze is blowing down…you can feel nothing at all right under it…strange.
