I think I caused quite a stir the other day with my Clearance Shopping At Target post. But really, you can save money at virtually every store. Granted, they might not put their stuff on clearance at 90%, but most stores do have sales and offer coupons and discounts. The “secret” is in the timing of your shopping. You can’t expect to purchase things on clearance if you shop on a whim. You have to hunt for bargains, stalk them down, get into the routines of knowing when a store has sales and what to expect.Â
My favorite way to find bargains is through thrift stores and garage sales. No big secret there. But again, you have to be consistent to find the deals. In our area, community sales are a big thing. In the Spring and in the Fall there are many communities having their semi-annual garage sales. It’s easy to hit 25 houses at a time having sales in one community. I check the garage sale ads in the newspaper and hit the neighborhood sales when the first start. After a while, I remembered which houses in the neighborhoods had kids close to the same age as mine, so I would check their sales first. I could usually find clothes that were in good condition, and the right size for my children.
Thift stores are similar. There are several really good ones in my area but the best stuff gets snatched up quickly. Frequent regular visits are the key to getting in on the good stuff. I have noticed a lot of competition from ebay resellers, although I have not tried selling my finds through ebay. I am considering it though.
Another resource for saving money is signing up for Freecycle program.  With this program, you sign up for your local community freecycle group and you’ll be added to an email list. It started as a method of waste reduction and is based on local communities. People in the group post when they have to stuff to give away or when they are looking for something in particular. I’ve seen a ton of really good stuff offered for free.
