She says,
We are currently working on stocking up on our hurricane supplies. We live in a hurricane prone state (Florida) and our memories of the 3 hurricanes that hit us in 2004 have not faded. Since we “survived the storms”, our actual experiences helped us to determine what supplies we needed to have on hand.
1. Water. We plan to have enough drinking water for 7 days.Â
2. Food. We plan on having enough non-perishable food to last 7 days.
3. Flashlights, batteries, and a portable radio.
4. First aid supplies.
5. Tarps.
6. Stash of emergency cash.Â
Since our financial records are all in order, we will simply take the file containing all our important papers with us (including our Quicken backup disk) if we have to evacuate (or go into the closet, if need be).
We found from past experience that it is better to stock up on this stuff now, rather than when a hurricane is approaching. Once a hurricane gets close, then all the stores are packed with people buying stuff, the shelves go bare pretty quickly, tempers flare, and it is just basically not a scene that we want to deal with again. Buying early also helps us get the best prices on stuff too.
