Although I don’t write often on this blog about making extra money, it’s one thing that I am asked about a lot. When I tell people what I do for a living, most are genuinely surprised that any money can be made with blogging and social media. Most people think you need to have a huge following to make money and are actually surprised to learn that money can be made even with a small blog using WordPress.
While there are multiple ways for a blogger to earn income from their blog, one of the best ways for a smaller niche blog to earn money is through brand sponsorships or influencer marketing. So what exactly is a brand sponsorship? It’s where the blogger reviews a company’s product or offering for some type of compensation. The blogger could be asked to do a book review, a product review, create a recipe from a new product, or simply mention a particular product or brand on social media.
Here are some of my tips to help you build your income from blogging and social media through brand sponsorships:
Build Your Audience
First, build your audience and constantly work on expanding your reach. If you are first starting out, take time to build connections with your audience through commenting and social media. Don’t try to monetize your blog too quickly or by having too many ads. Make sure your voice is “your voice” – do not try to imitate another blogger.
Stay True To Your Voice
Once you’ve built an audience, make sure you stay true to your voice. What I mean by this is when evaluating brand sponsorships ask yourself if it is really something you can recommend. Initially it can be difficult to turn down sponsorships, but in the long run it will only be to your benefit to stay true and authentic to your voice and your readers.
Choose Brands You Trust
When choosing brands and/or sponsorships, choose ones that you believe in. I have turned down many opportunities because they didn’t fit in with my voice or blog focus or I was asked to recommend something that I didn’t believe in. Aim to keep the brand sponsorship a win-win for both yourself and the brand.
Networking has been one of the most successful ways I’ve built my blog and online income. I’ve had a great deal of success by reaching out to companies and brands I was interested in. Sometimes it just takes one email to get the conversation started. Joining a network where brands are (such as Socialix) can be a great way to get started with brands.
When you partner with a brand make sure you keep your end of the bargain. Follow the sponsorship rules, be positive, and deliver what you promised you would – on time, every time. Make it your goal to keep your brands happy and they will gladly give you repeat business.
